A man was treated with anti-venin after he was bit by a snake in the garden department of a Central Florida Wal-Mart, according to Local 6 News. Officials said a man was reaching into a plant Monday at a Wal-Mart in Sanford, Fla., located on U.S. Highway 192 when the snake bit his hand. The man was treated and should recover from the bite, Local 6 News reported.

Tuesday, Wal-Mart is assuring customers that Central Florida stores are safe and that it was an isolated incident. Trappers captured and killed the snake after a portion of the store was closed. Wal-Mart is not saying what kind of snake was captured in the store, Local 6 News reported.

Arrow FOLLOW-UP: More info... on snake & victim

Source: WAFF48

A central Florida man is in the hospital after being bitten by a pygmy rattlesnake at a Wal-Mart garden center.

Friends say the snake bit the 51-year-old wheelchair-bound man as he reached into a plant at a store in Sanford, which is located about 25 miles northeast of Orlando.

They estimate the rattler was between 15 and 18 inches long.

"I was in the next aisle. He started yelling, 'I got bit by a snake, I got bit by a snake.' I ran over there and saw the snake on him," says Mary Panagopulos, a friend of the victim.

"I saw it on his hand and when he yanked it off, his hand began bleeding at that time. He beat it with his cane, rolled over it with his feet," says Jerry Battaglia, another friend.

Wal-Mart called the snake bite "an isolated incident" and says it is taking precautions to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The man, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital and given anti venom.

He is in stable condition.

I really don't understand why they had to kill the snake. It was probably angry that it was in a wal-mart. No reason they couldn't have released it, it's not like a vicious dog. The snake bit to protect itself, not because it was mean.
