TIVOLI … A Tivoli volunteer firefighter was injured Monday when he fell about 30 feet off a rock ledge while trying to help a snake bite victim, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office said.
Wayne Hildenbrand, 54, was trying to help a 14-year-old girl who had been bitten by an unknown type of snake in a steep ravine under the Kidd Lane Bridge, police said.
Hildenbrand, whose son Mark Hildenbrand is the Tivoli fire chief, was helping the girl climb out of the ravine when he was pulled off balance and fell just before 5 p.m., police said.
He was rescued by firefighters from Tivoli and Red Hook, and taken to Saint Francis Hospital with head injuries where he was expected to be treated and released.
The girl was taken to Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck. Her condition was unknown Monday night, police said.
