Cane Toad fertilizer in Oz?
Update: Tuesday, February 7, 2006. 2:37pm (AEDT)
Cane toads to be in used in fertiliser trial
An organic fertiliser company has taken on 200 kilograms of dead cane toads
to see if they can be used as fertiliser on gardens or commercial farms.
It is the latest attempt to dispose of a growing cane toad population in
Australia's north.
Frog Watch, a key group in the fight against the pest, organises a toad
collection.
The consignment of about 2,000 cane toads from a Howard Springs aquaculture
farm south of Darwin is placed in a vat and mixed with a liquid that breaks
them down and kills any toxins.
Money Co managing director Dean Walkley says it is too early to know if cane
toad fertiliser will be a commercially viable product.
But he says like fish fertiliser the toads could do well on mango farms or
in the backyard.
