Park's traffic ban
By Cara Page
WARDENS at one of Scotland's most famous parks have imposed a traffic ban in a bid to save the lives of hundreds of mating toads.
The amorous amphibians have to cross a busy road to reach breeding ponds at Holyrood Park in Edinburgh.
Locals say hundreds of the toads have died in recent years after wandering into the path of cars.
So park chiefs have ordered a two-week long closure of a stretch near Dunsapie Loch until mating season has ended.
And they have erected Beware Of The Toad signs at nearby ***** Margaret's Loch.
A spokeswoman for Historic Scotland, who manage the park, said: 'Every year, there are very high toad fatalities during the migratory period.
'As a result, we made the decision to close the road.'
