It is a sad day for me, because I have just come home from school today and discovered my new Baby Redtail deceased.. I took him out and surveyed him and found mites crawling inside of his mouth..He also seemed to have some of his bedding stuck up in his mouth. At purchase, I bought bed-a-beast over Repti-Bark and took all the precautions to make sure he was mite free. I sruveyed him twice a day for a week checking, and I looked thouroughly through his bedding and waterdish for them..I looked for all the warning signs and never saw a one of them or anything that warned me of them. I guess this is what I get for buying from a PetCo..I am going down to PetCo in a bit, and I will let you know what I find out..

Sorry to hear this ! How long have you had the snake anyway ? AND please let us know what you find out from your visit to petco also. Did you purchase the bedding and everything from them? What were the conditions of your husbandry all around with the snake also ? Enough questions from me...

I have only had the snake around 20 days or so.. I did purchase everything from them but I did do a wipedown of the cage and other things before puting them in there. The husbandry was quite good, I always kept temps perfect, cleaned up messes, clean water, and correct humidity. He had a hide space..a hot and cool side and everything I needed.

Well, I just got back from PetCo and they were very sympethic, but I could barely keep from yelling at them. I recieved my money back, and I plan never to return there. I will be looking into a quality breeder, no more of that. This still puzzles me though. I fed him on Friday and got a good look at his mouth and there was nothing wrong or noticable and it was clean. BTW, he ate prekilled frozen pinkies so I didn't suspect infestation from there. Saturday he was fine, but no one saw him on Sunday. Then today on Monday I find him with bedding in his mouth and mites crawling about..I just don't get how I would have never have seen this before? I checked his entire body for these little buggers with nothing found..Oi..

A new theory: I noticed when I put my snake back into his cage he always lifted his front half up into the air staring to the sky, almost like he was stargazing. It may have been IBD transfered from the mites I saw in his mouth.. It just puzzle me though, how come I never saw the mites until after he passed away?
