Hey Drift...Did you mean BRAND instead of MAND?? lol...The place gets crowded due to the hospital downstairs...sorry I didn't mentioned it to you earlier!! Anyway, I'm glad to hear things worked out at the vet's and you will get the answers you need. By the way, are you going to the Herp show on the 13th or 14th??

dangit...LOL...meant Brand...sorry 'bout that Don't know WHERE I got Mand from
Yeah, the parking was...ummm...interesting. If you'd seen my truck, you woulda laughed at the thought of parking it in THERE! lol...I ended up parking on the far right side of the dirt parallel with the road...lol...had to almost push my door UP to get out! Anyway, thanks for referring me to that place. It's not very far at all from my place, so future trips won't be hard at all, and the price is great. Just hope they get results from the initial tests W/O having to do tissue samples.
When/where is this herp show? Yeah, I'll go if it's close/price feasable...sounds like FUN!

hey, slaponte...I guess I *kinda* took it personally...I was just trying to tell everyone that said ALL boas should start out on pinky rats or bigger that in MY particular case, Thumper was just too small. Yeah, I go through the same stress, as sometimes stuff just looks HUGE in the petstore, until you go home and put it next to the snake, and find it's too small To be honest, I really don't know the exact differences between anything above a pinky. Fuzzy, rat pup, etc...to me, they're either small and pink or they are bigger and fuzzy Can anyone shed some light on this matter for me? THANKS!

Also, just another question...being as my Burm is right around 2 ft long, and maybe 2-2 1/2 in. in circumference...is a pinky rat and a (remember I don't know the sizes too well) fuzzy enough for him? The fuzzy was quite large, and I really didn't think he'd go after the pinky, but he did. Just wondering if maybe I should move up to 2 fuzzies? He is a real nice thick snake, and I would like to keep him that way

Drift, Rodent Pro's website has lengths on the different sizes of rats as well as weights. If you click on each one, you'll see sizes and they put a quarter or dollar next to them for a size comparison. It helps me.

kewl...thanks phaedrus
YUP...I was wrong. I gave him a rat pup, not a fuzzy. So...is a pup and a pinky a good enough meal, or should I do two pups, or a fuzzy and a pup? That site really helped a lot! I'm sure I'll be referring to it quite often...

try a fuzzy or 2 pups
sorry about your loose I have lost a couple snakes some of which were doomed to die anyway i would have rather had them then someone else. At least you gave your Thumper a chance. I bought 3 brand new CH ball pythons once that had hatched just days before. They all died but the vet told me they was nothing I could have done to prevent their death they had internal parasites and they just werent strong enough to fight the parasites. They lived for 2 months then they all died about a month apart.
Hope leo will be alright....
O and reptile shows are fun! Be careful what you buy tho dont buy new borns make sure htey got some size on them and look like they are eating good, handle the animal first also, but some places wont let you handle them, watch out for those.

Okay. I put about 20% bleach and 80% water in a spray bottle and sprayed the entire cage, soaking everything. Should I dilute the bleach less...say maybe 50-50, or even less, and let it dry? I have heard that when bleach dries, it'll be a white powder...and non-toxic...but what about when you rinse the cage out...it'll "re-energize" the powder, won't it? Will my current mixture kill any possible deseases/parasites? Just want to make sure. I plan to let it dry over the weekend, and clean it out Monday. Or just rinse it out if what I've done is enough. Rinse it well with plain water to eliminate the bleach.
Like you said, it will reactivate with water such as misting and you don't want that.
Most of us use a lesser concentration of bleach, around 10% bleach the rest water, but the 20% you used should be fine as long as you rinse it well.

Again let me stress this. A new born boa constrictor should be fed a pink rat or small hopper mouse at it's very first feeding, just after the first shed a week or so after birth. Even an 8 inch runt can take at least a large fuzzy or small pink rat. Any boa that is so small that it can't take a pink mouse is not likely to make it and shouldn't be purchased. But the fact that your boa had been eating something for several weeks leads me to believe that he was able to take proper sized prey. His skinny body still had normal sized digestive tract and his skin does stretch....I promise ya...it would go down fine. I think the act of digesting alone probably burned more calories than he would ever get off a pinky a week and this is what wasted him away. He never had a chance to grow out of his condition because he wasn't getting enough nourishment. I'm not meaning to come down so hard on you, but...please don't let this happen again. Forget anything about a pink mouse....they don't exist unless you have some hatchling cornsnakes or something. Also, keep a frame of mind that you must keep up with increasing the size of the prey as the snake does grow....and for the first 2 years, this is VERY often. If a baby snake isn't growing then something is wrong. parasites, heating/husbandry problems, or simply not enough food.....At the same time, you can't over feed a boa either...power feeding boas will always cause you major problems...they are prone to regurge syndrome and when they start that sometimes there is no stopping it. Gotta find that happy medium.

Okay, I'll admit that my weak knowledge of the feeding practices of snakes was partly the cause of his malnourishment, but HE was also not helping, as he WOULD NOT eat any more than ONE pinky at a time. He was a very thin snake, and I should have said screw it, and gave him something to fill his stomach with a nice bulge, but I didn't, and he's dead now, so it's over, and I have learned my lesson. Plain and Simple. I have always heard "feed your snake using the girth rule" and that's ex | |
