How much should it cost to have that necropsy done? To be honest, money's tight right now, and don't have much to spare I believe he was just a couple months old, and I got him from Petco in Coronado. I believe they DO NOT know how to take care of their snakes, as I have stated in another post. I can't get mad at them, though. Sometimes these things just happen. I just wish it didn't happen to my Thumper. I went through SO much to get him...lol...thought I was getting a deal on him with a sale going on, and ended up bouncing a check and paying more than his reg. price I didn't mind a bit though. He was SOOO tame. I would let ANYONE hold him totally unsupervised, even if he was an adult. Maybe his extra tameness was part of the problem? I still have him sitting in a box, unsure of what to do with him. I live in apartments, so I can't just dig a hole in the backyard and have a burial for him. The other option (NO WAY) is to put him in the dumpster...forget THAT! I will dig a nice little hole in the flowerbed around my apartment. He WILL get a proper burial! I really am gonna miss him a lot...and I only knew him for a couple months. Thank GOD I didn't have him his entire life! I'd be devastated! Anyway, thank you all for your kind words...I know there's a lot of people who can relate to how I feel. Let's just hope Leo doesn't suffer the same fate. ALSO...quick question. I noticed his back section looked a little bloated (like with water or something), and *investigated* it. Liquid came out, along with his poop, which all went down the toilet. I should have left it in there for the necropsy, huh? Or do they have other ways of checking him out? (never heard of this procedure 'till today...along the same lines as an autopsy, right?) Anyway, hope your weekends went better than mine...talk to ya soon!

Thanks for that info, Brand...I'll give them a call. Would they do the necropsy, too? Figure I can kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.

hey. i just noticed in your post you were talking about offering him a live pinky. if you were feeding live prey the whole time i'd say theres a decent chance that he got parasites from eating them. i always feed frozen because with frozen food theres not much chance if any of meal items giving your snake parasites. just a suggestion. sorry for your loss.

yeah I gave him pinkys from the store killed by me. I *should* have froze them first, and that's the first thing I'm changing with Leo's diet. I do NOT want to lose Leo too...BTW, anyone know how much this necropsy should cost? I AM limited on funds, and can't spend too much
Also, just realized I read that post wrong. I didn't think you meant non-dilluted bleach...thought there was some form of *pure* bleach That's why I was wondering if Clorox was good enough

Hmmm....
Seems like the place you got him from is the biggest problem.
Petco/PetSmart has had a bad year on reptiles with many unexplained deaths across the country.
If you haven't had him for too long, call them or take him there and raise heck with them and they may make good on it.
Then get one from a reputable breeder from here on Redtail and save lots compared to retail prices.
But from the situation from your posts, sounds like it was prolly doomed from the start after coming from the Petco. I am not sure if they got diseased snakes in, or if their animals got sick after arrival, but something odd is up with that place and their animals across the US. They have two lawsuits going at the moment also(posted on the front page news here) about their poor husbandry standards and neglect to all animals.
I still would not use that particular tank again.
And for the answer to the question on the cost of necropsy, it varies from vet to vet and lab to lab, but if it does give a conclusive answer, such as total encompasation of internal parasites, bacterial infection or worse, IBD, then well worth the cost considering you have other animals to think of and it could be used as ammo to have the store make good on the snake.
I'm pretty sure animal control would be interested in knowing that the store is selling very sick animals also, but with no physical proof, would be hard to convince them to take any action.
And the Clorox is fine, just mix it with water at about a 10% bleach to 90% water ratio.
Clean and rinse. Or clean, let dry in the sun, then rinse.

Yeah, it's the last time I get a pet from there. Poor Husbandry is putting it lightly from what I saw here in Coronado. I applied for a job there, because it seemed I was the only one who knew ANYTHING about the snakes! They have heat rocks in there, no heat lamps, they try feeding them FROZEN pinky's...OMG...I could go ON and ON. This one snake...it's mouth was all impacted with dirt, and NO ONE noticed it!!!! and they work there ALL day long. Iwas there for...ohhh... .25 seconds and noticed it. My GOD!!! I saw after I took time out of MY life to help them FREE OF CHARGE, they finally put green carpet in there instead of that dirt crap they had. Like I said...if I went in there and wrote a list of everything they have done wrong, it'd be like two pages, front and back. NO JOKE. and that's just with their snakes. Anyway, why does everyone say NOT to use the cage again?? I paid a LOT of money for that to just throw it away when it's not even broke. I would think bleach would kill anything left in there, right? Also, I don't know about that vet thing. I am low on funds, and they will probably charge double to check both snakes out. I can just have the new one tested for everything, right? Or would it be cheaper to have them check Thumper, and screen Leo for the same stuff? Well, actually, I'm going to want a full check done on Leo anyway, just to be safe, so in all reality, it wouldn't matter what they found on Thumper...Leo would be checked for the same thing and then some. ALTHOUGH...that WOULD be great ammunition for Petco to give me a refund. I just don't want Thumper sitting on ice while I try and scrounge up the money, know what I mean? LOL...heard enough of me being wishy washy 'bout this? I just don't know what to do. If I had a couple hundred extra dollars, I'd have it done right away...

Having the burm checked out would be a good idea, however, if your boa had IBD the ONLY way to know for sure is a necropsy. They still have not been able to come up with a 100% conclusive test on live animals for IBD.
Sorry about your loss

The only problem with getting this snake checked out right now is what I said before. I'm broke right now...any suggestions on keeping Thumper in *good* condition until then? That's good info about the IBD. I wasn't aware they could't check 100% in live animals. This SUCKS...anyone know the winning lotto numbers?

HI,
DOn't forget to clean the hides and the water dishes, bleach and water will sterilze anything. JUst be sure to allow some airing out time if any of the toys are wood to allow the wood to dry out ..You never know what has happened to animal in its past. I only buy online from someone who is known and comes with exellent postive outcomes from fellow herpers. To many things can go wrong during shipments, not knowing how to ship during really cold days or hot knowing if the shipper protects it shipments from extremes during that wait time to loadand deliver. I hope this is the last of your bad luck with boa's...After you clean that cage you could proably find a boa thats up for addoption, thats healthy and ready for a new home..
here's and example of someone about to move and needs a good home.

There's so many that need homes... DOug
