i feel so bad for you. I just got over losing my ball python. I called him "Lil' Head." I dont know where the name came from... I only had him for 5 months and i felt like i'd just lost my cat or something. (My cats are like my children, they stay far away from my snakes). I cried for two days or so. I didnt realize he was so sick until it was too late. I still dont know exactly what he died from. RIP Lil' Head

I feel for your loss greatly, I have had my Shiikar for over a year now and know I would mourn her as much as I have mourned over any of my other pets. It is great what they teach us in their own way and I will never forget the lessons I have gained from them all. Scaled, Feathered or furry, We love them and they all show us how they feel in some way. I do hope that the autopsy does qualm some of your feelings and put you at rest, But if she was suffering than being put down may have been best.

Sorry about your loss. Just a question- Is IBD and "Stargazing" the same thing? I remember reading about stargazing but don't remember exactly what it is.

Rogue, IBD (Inclusion body disease) is sometimes called "Stargazing disease." The neurological symptoms show up in the final stages of the disease due to inclusions spreading to the brain. It is definately a bad thing to have in a collection.
blu93stang, I am very sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, since noone is 100% sure how the disease is spread, it would probably be a very good idea not to let any snakes into or out of your collection for at least 1 year of all your snakes being 100% healthy. Definately treat mites as a really big deal if you find any. Mites are considered a vector for the disease.
Good luck and you have my condolences.
-Morti.

I feel for you. You are in my best wishes.
What is Steve M. Of Serpents Den in Leheighton,Pa doing about it? Has he stopped breeding, or is he still dealing these possibly infected snakes?

Was a necropsy done on the snake to verify that it was IBD, and possibly how long the snake has had it?

I doubt IBD had anything to do with it. There is no way a vet can look at a snake and know that's what's wrong. I doubt even a necropsy would turn up an answer for IBD unless your vet happens to have an electron microscope or access to one....and then he/she would also need to know what to look for. The broken back would be enough for the snake to exhibit the neurological problems you described.

was she ever bred while at serpent den? if so, is it at all possible for the broken back to have happened during mating?

No way. I'm over 300 pounds and I've never broken anyone's back lol
There is nothing in the act of mating that could break a ball python's back. I'm having doubts about this vet that is so eager to scream IBD. Perhaps the back was broken while stretching out a stiff snake for necropsy? Otherwise the injury had to have been from mishandling before, during or while transporting.

Since you got her a proffessional examination before and after handing her over, isolating the time of the illness and injury, can't you get them for some sort of malpractice? Bad buissness? False advertisement? Anything?!
