I guess it should be noted that in glass tanks that you keep humid...DO NOT spray the glass. Spray the substrate. A lot of humidity loving reptiles also love to lick the water off the glass.

wow I am so not looking forward to ever having this problem. Is this something that only comes with new reptiles?
I mean I can't see cypress that is in a garden center carrying reptile mites....I can see a petstore having it----or a new aquisition----but a garden center?
Is there something I am not seeing here?

I know that I got mine from a bag of "repti bark" that I bought at the pet store. And mites can be anywhere, even in a bag of cypress at a garden center. I think you're just better off baking the substrate for a while before putting it in your cage.

Mites live about 10% of their life cycle on a host animal. The other 90% they live elsewhere. While they may not actually come in in the substrate, though very often it seems that they do, they will take up housekeeping in a supply there and wait even if you bring them in on your clothes after a trip to a petstore or something. I doubt anyone ever really knows for sure where exactly they came from. If they knew that, they wouldn't have brought them into the snakeroom hopefully....kinda like how people always seem to know exactly what they ate that made them sick. I always have to ask, if you knew it was food poisoned, why did you eat it?

LOL Feel free to come bake substrate here on cage cleaning day. If I do all the cages, that's about 6 huge bags or so of cypress...enough to fill 3 large garbage cans. That's why I just spray it with permetherin.

It's easy for me. I only have one snake, one tank. I've been cautious about the permetherin because of some negative things I've heard, but I guess I should give it a try.

Question for the Guru: How long do you let the permetherin sit in the cage before you put your snakes back in?
