Porch Possum Picnic
My front porch is getting pretty busy. I have several squirrels that will come beg for peanuts and take them from my hand. Megan puts out catfood for a couple of stray cats and I see them fairly regular but pretty much every night this little guy comes to raid whatever is out there. Sometimes I leave him a few table scraps too. I posted a couple of shots of him in a tree awhile back when I first noticed him hanging around ...but he has gotten a bit bolder so I update...

It's hard to believe that something that appears so cute and cuddly can be soooooo nasty!

That's one awesome possum!
I have a red fox that visits but I haven't been quick enough with the camera.

Nice pictures heh.
I remeber looking down out of my window in my old house and finding a possum with a baby next to it. Being only 12 at the time and not knowing much about wildlife i decided to go down and take a look. That thing hissed at me like non other lol. I think theye were living under our house because i saw alot of possum in the short time i was living there!

The are SOOOOOO harmless!!! Slow moving cute little waddle. I love them. I raised 5 babies I found with their roadkilled mother once. There is nothing mean or evil about them. Sure they hiss...they are scared and know they can't out run anything. But they won't attack you unless you are rotting roadkill or a bowl of catfood LOL. I have caught a few adults by surprising them...when scared, they just roll over and play dead. Then you can just pick them up by the scruff and the tail...nothing to it and while all of them have hissed, none have ever even tried to bite me. There is only one known case of an opossum supposedly testing positive for rabies...I wonder though if this was an actual test or just an assumption that a sick opossum had rabies...who knows? They do stink though and if you ever pick one up, it takes a lot of scrubbing and soap to get the smell off.

I was out in the woods looking for some squirrel once, saw one of them critters there so I went a bit closer. To my surprise it didn't play dead, it hissed and advanced on me. I guess it was trying to get me away from something *shrug* it even followed me around a bit. As if to say, and don't come back!
No one ever believed this story tough, everyone, I mean EVERY one just said, ahh it must have been something else, they just play dead! Oh well.
