AND here's part two! I also took some pictures of one of our hold back Hypo Red Group Boas. This baby was produced last year from a Red Group female bred to a Hypo male. The Red Group female was a fairly good looking girl but the hypo male was pretty average. I would consider him a B-grade hypo. He was pretty dark with lots of speckling, etc.

HOWEVER, as you can see from the photos, the pairing produced some beautiful Hypo Red Group Boas!! So you can actually get some pretty good looking results with a Red Group boa and a "so-so" looking Hypo Boa. It would be a fairly inexpensive project to get into (IMO).

This year, we have a very nice Red Group Male that has bred with a nice looking Hypo female so the Hypo Red Group babies should be EVEN better looking this year! Imagine breeding some of the KILLER Hypo/Salmon Boas we've all seen out there into the Red Group Bloodline!

ENJOY the photos!

Celia

I'm going to post this here too...

Okay...it seems like me posting these pictures has caused some sort of FRENZY! LOL! Anyways, I've been getting lots of requests from people to be alerted when these babies are ready so I am compiling my 2003 Red Group Mailing List. If you would like to be on the mailing list, you can either post your name and email address in the threads here OR email me directly with your information at webmaster@eastbayvivarium.com . I will email everyone on the list when our Red Group Boas are ready so these people will get the first heads-up!

So just let me know!

John - I think your C-grade Hypo would produce some very nice looking babies if bred to one of our Red Group Boas. The Hypo that we had was honestly very "blah" in my personal opinion. He just wouldn't be what I would look for in a hypo. He had quite a bit of speckling all over and was very dark. I know Rich Ihle has some really awesome looking salmons and even his C-grade animals are NICE!

SteveP - Thanks for the compliments! That's very nice of you to say!

billycat215 - The Hypo Red Group Boas are rather pricey. Last year we only had 1.1 of them available for sale and they were priced at $1,000 each. Both of them were sold. I expect the price to be about the same this year but it will really depend on what the babies look like. The Red Group Boas themselves should be around $175 to $350+ each, once again dependant on coloration/pattern.

Thanks,
Celia

Ok, stupid question probably, but:
what's the difference between hypos and albinos? They look a lot the same to me.
Thanks a lot

vetstudent82 - Hypomelanism and Albinism are two totally different genes. In Boas, Hypomelanism is a co-dominant trait while Albinism is a simple recessive trait. Hypos vary in degrees. Most people try to breed for super pink/orange colored hypos. Some hypos can appear almost albinistic. But if you look at the animal, you will see that it does not have red colored eyes. While there may be red coloration in the eye, the eye itself is not red in a Hypo Boa. Albinism is the lack of melanin while Hypomelanism is reduced melanin. While you can find Hypo Boas with almost no black speckling you wouldn't be able to find any with red pupils - and therfore no melanin in the eyes like albinos (as far as I know!)

Here are some pictures of my baby Albino Boa that you can compare to the baby Hypo Boa photos in this thread...

Hope this helps.

Celia

This is probably a silly question, because as far as I know no molecular research has been done on boa genetics, but do they know if hypomelanism and albinism are actually two different genes or if they are two different alleles of the same gene?
