Hail to the Emperor
I needed some color in my educational programs and I needed some more amphibians. This species fit the bill nicely. It is just NOT a hands-on animal for the kids since it is toxic. But it is interestng, bright, and get fairly large. Sorry if the shots are not great, I am still learning this new camera and I just realized that i did not get a shot of his little paddle tail.

Re: Hail to the Emperor
What an adorable little guy....he looks like a cartoon character. What is his actual size? Is he native to your area?

Re: Hail to the Emperor
He is native to Asia. They are also called Mandarin Newts. Right now he is about 4" long but can get up to double that. Those little orange protrusions are poison glands. one newt has enough poison to kill 2500 mice (says one source I found).

Re: Hail to the Emperor
Just don't lick it and you'll be find. I didn't find much in the way of warnings on them.
