Actually I did not find the little guy. Someone from work brought him into me. They thought he was a copperhead. LMAO!! You should have seen their face when he bit me the first time. I thought I was gonna die. I thought about saying it was a cobra and running from the room screaming but decided that might cause a real stir, so I just told them he was harmless. Anyway, I took some pics to put up here. Hope you guys enjoy, I think I am going to put him out in my backyard!

He is quite cute. Really good biter too. As small as he is he has already gotten me twice. I have not decided whether to release him or not. Great snake though....really pretty.

Wow, cool! I had a guy from come into my office to talk about identifying a snake - on he killed last night Turned out to be a harmless 12" brown snake...

He's a cutie Ted, but I would release him IF you can find a suitable habitat for him. But he #$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^& cute and looks like a real "tough guy"

That sucks that he killed it J. I know I always encourage people to leave them alone, lest they are venomous. I tell them that if they are close enough to hit it, they are close enough to be bitten. I don't know if it helps or not.
I have a lot of woods behind my house, and would think that would be a suitable environment for him. What should I look for?

Down there just behind your fence at the bottom of the hill would be the perfect new home for him! He should find plenty of cover there with lots of good food sources for a growing corn.

Have fun man!

That doesnt look like a corn, looks like a Red Milk, or a Coastal plains milk.

You're partly correct Telefrag. It is a milk. However, it's a juvenile Eastern.

Ive had easterns and reds,
and it looks more like a syspila to me than a L.t.t

but given the area of intergrade, and the variablility over their range,
I wouldnt doubt it being an eastern, with some syspila or temporalis influence.

a ventral shot would be helpful though.

Three of the reasons why I suspect L.t.t. ober anything else are:

1) The pattern just behind the head. In syspila, the neck is generally banded, while triangulum typically sports the "Y".

2) As best I can tell from the pics, since they're a bit dark, there appears to be no black on the parietal scales. Syspila typically has at least part of these scales covered by a black band.

3) The # of dorsal saddles are within the range for triangulum (26-5), but seem a bit high for syspila (16-31).

Also, this particular animal is consistent with the easterns that are found up here in MI, where no integration occurs.

Needless to say though, we can agree on one thing- a corn it ain't

Ok guys...ask and you shall receive. I really know nothing about colubrids, so I just assumed it was a corn snake based on it's belly looking like maize corn. Let me know what you guys think.

yah Ken, now that im at home and looking at old pics I have taken of syspila, and after seeing the belly shots,
it looks like a L.t.t to me know,
its been awhile.... they say the memory is the first thing to go.

Mine seems to have begun to abandon me long ago. Sadly, I'm not kidding... at 28, I find myself sometimes struggling to recall otherwise simple things.

Did you decide what you were going to do with it?

They are pretty neat little guys, well not that little.
If you can get it feeding it would be a good pet.

Thanks guys for the I.D.
I have not decided. He is pretty neat, but I know squat about milk snakes (obviously the temp and environment thing is easy) but it stops about there.
What do they eat? Little lizards, crickets, toads, stuff like that?
I really need to invest in a feild guide.
Are you interested in him telefrag?

They're mostly rodent eaters, but they also take birds, small snakes (they ARE Lampropeltis), lizards - toads, hmmm, maybe but I doubt it.

If you decide to keep him feed him day old pinkies or anole/gecko tails. You might keep him for the winter and release him in the spring also

He may do ok if you just try some small pinks,
I dont need anymore snakes, as much as I would love to get back into eastern milks ( A highly underrated snake).
If you can get him feeding, I would recommend keeping it, or finding a new home for it,
since releasing it may not work out too well for him, you have to make sure there is an existing population of small lizards and field mice wherever you turn him loose, and getting close to winter, he/she may have no idea where to go to find a place to overwinter.

If you cant find anyone to take him,
I could offer you a trade
IM me if you want to talk about that.
