PS...I cut its nails and glued its beak shut with surgical glue(yes 100% safe) so my snake would be OK. I also stunned it a little first.

Awwww Nothing i like more than a story about 2 different types of animals getting along. You can tell the retic has ver stong feelings for the chicken. it embraces her with such passion. And then they join as one, What a beutiful thing. Ahhhh I'm all warm and fuzzy now. Great pics J Riley!
I think Ed_R should write the tale (no pun intended).
He already has a flair for non-fiction writing as shown above!

Hey What a great idea! Let's post pics of feeding a Live animal on the web for all of the anti-reptile people to see. Not just a rodent as is usual in these cases, but a chicken... with it's feet trimmed and *shudders* It's beak glued shut. I think that's the best idea I have seen in a while.
*sigh*

I would have to agree with BG and Morti. I would not want any harm to come to the snake, but whether or not it is safe for the snake, having your mouth glued shut cannot be very enjoyable. I know it may have been for a short time, but if I kick a dog just once, it was just a short pain, right?
A lot of people don't like snakes and would love to see ownership banned. Pictures like these are exactly the amunition that they want to do it with. If you take a moment and step away from the situation and look at it from an outsiders point of view, how would it look? Not good at all.
I am not here to judge, but it should be pointed out. I would vote that this thread be taken down. What do the rest of our members think?

I may be pretty knew and definitely not as knowledgeable as about 99% of you... but why so harsh? As if those National Geographic specials on public TV are any better?
The ones who take time to actually look for some form of cruelty to animals are going to find it, no matter where it is. No matter how minor, they will make it severe. If someone sees a lion attack a gazelle, those same people are going to take a stand against the gazelle? What if the lion was at a zoo and preferred live prey, so they tied the gazelle's feet together?
Well, I guess it's a bad analogy, but as for the chicken: it's feet weren't cut off. She said she just cut the nails, no? So is declawing a cat wrong, too? It might have been stunned and had a glued beak, but it didn't look like it was moaning for it's life, either.
I have no problem with this pictures myself, but again this is just from my point of view that might not mean much to those who know their books. But I am smart enough to know that you can't satisfy everyone in the world, no matter how hard you try.
The snake had a nice meal, period. End of story.

You're absolutely right that the "anti brigade" will always find cruelty in something! But why should we give them ammunition when they are quite clearly capable of digging it out themselves. They don't need us putting it on a plate for them to pick up and serve with a big dollop of publicity on the side. Pics like this and of people carrying snakes in public places are all things that go toward arming the "anti brigade" with just what they need to blow our hobby out of the water. I for one don't appreciate it and I'm sure many others on this site will feel the same.

I dont agree with live feeding for the sake of both parties. (and glued beaks can still stab)
The original poster seems to be taking an "interesting" attitude to the whole process and Im a bit angry.
We're not soft here, we breed our own rodents for food and kill them too. They're hard work to raise yet all r treated with respect and given the best treatment through their lives. Death is instantaneous and we dont take pleasure from it. We've never had a refusal of prekilled.
Aside from that, this doesnt halp our cause, it's adding fuel to the fire.
I dont know whether it should be taken off the forum. It's brushing dirt under the carpet.
I think Id rather others voiced their opinion whichever side they're on.

>> So is declawing a cat wrong, too?
I am not a cat person, but the VAST majority of them are highly aganst it. They call it "De-Toeing" because that is what the surgical procedure actually does... It takes the toe off right below the first knuckle. Sound like something you want to go through? But I digress back to the point of the issue...
Here at redtailboa.net the advice that we give as an "official position" regarding feeding is that frozen thawed is far better than live. It is healthier for the animal, it is more convienient to the keeper, and it is less cruel to the prey animal. Feeding a chicken to a snake is somthing that I consider to be a bad idea under the best of circumstances. As J_Riley aluded, it will always cause runny, bad smelling stools and it is not unheard of for the beak to peirce the stomach walls and cause major damage to the surrounding tissue. I don't want to see anything bad happen to any animal.
You mentioned gazells out in the wild and lions as an analogy for how this could somehow be right. The key thing there is that those animals are in the wild. This snake is in captivity. Feeding in a humane manner is part of the responsibility of all captive keepers of animals be that in a home environment or in a zoo.
I don't claim to be the athority or the most knowledgeable on what is right and what is wrong, but I have been given the responsibility of waching out for what goes here at redtailboa.net. Deleting posts is not something that I do lightly. I just posted so that everyone that sees these pictures is aware that this is not a stance we take as an orgnization.
Thanks for your comments and let's try to keep it a friendly discussion.
-Morti.

Gee I guess we should take down ALL the feeding pic posts then.
I suppose it's much more humane to take a rat by the tail and thump it against the wall like is described so many times.
Or to feed a rabbit to a snake dead or alive.
Half of the people that posted on this thread have themselves posted feeding pics. Just because in this case it isnt a rodent.Yes with the beak glued shut it still can peck, so does that mean it would have been better to saw the whole beak off? Or did anyone ever stop to think maybe this snake for some reason may only take fowl? Not likely for a retic but possible. Did anyone happen to ask?
Ok How about the people that have large burms and retics that buy feeder goats? they have to saw the horns off, though sounds cruel too, and sawing the horns doesnt mean the goat can't bite or kick the snake.
Lets get real.
