Okay.. so I couldn't help but show off one of the prettiest of the red's we have.
Not sure if this ones male or female, I'm hopefully going to take them to the East Bay Vivarium this weekend and see if they can sex them for me. Considering I dont have a clue..
But I just wanted to share with you all. These guys are thriving in there new enviorment. They love all the heat, and fresh clean water everyday. The second night we bought some crickets to see how they did. I have never had so much fun watching any reptile eat like I did these guys. There were so cute, they carry around the crickets in there mouth like a dog with a bone. Looking for a suitable place to stop and reposition the cricket to chomp on it. Man oh man, these guys are sweet.
Here's a picture for you to see.
Here's one of the gang.

where you gonna house these monsters when they're full grown?
you can always send a couple my way.. j/k

COOOOL!! I love tegus ! do they have names yet? LDYDRGN: reds usually get 2.5 to 3 feet, but can reach up to 3.5 feet.
think crickets are cool!?, then you'll love gold fish! put a few gold fish in a little dish with water, and watch them go at it! tegus like to snack throughout the day, if you leave them about 4 gold fish after they've already eaten, they'll snack on em' all day. mine love strawberries almost as much as eggs!. I think it's part of a tegu's personality as what they like to eat, you can definatly tell what foods each individual prefeers, they don't all like the same things! most tegus are really smart also, they can learn their names!!!! belive it or not, they realy can. tegus are the best lizard over all to have as a pet in my opinion, just as long as you spend a lot of time with them.
however, parasites are a big prblem, get them checked by an expierienced vet, and house them seperatly, A.S.A.P! diddn't you say these tegus came from "less than desirable" living conditions? (if you don't have enough room / enclosures, I'll be glad to accomadate one hehehe ) Juggalo

Captin and Jugg,
Yeah I know I needed to quarunteen them all seperately.. That was a big no no on my part.
We are actually taking them to our vet next week. Get them all checked out and probably alittle vitamin boost for the runt. Our vet is just right around the corner and I've been taking my reptiles to him for couple of years now.
Ldydrgn, as far as size.. These little guys can get upwards of 4 ft. We have a large enclosure now that they will stay in until such time that we need to build them a larger enclosure.
And we are only planning on Keeping one male and one female. So once they are sexed and have a clean bill of health we will then decide which ones we want and sell the other two, to some that can give them a good home.
I'll keep you guys in mind when it comes time to get two of them new homes.

They probably can't be sexed until they are bigger...
in males by the vent, you can usually see a large bulge which is the hemipenis..
Males also get the large jowels on the sides of their head, but that won't show
up for a little while... red tegus are very beautiful and impressive.. my fav of
the tegus.. but like most lizards, just too much work for me! lol

I love tegu's.......I have 2 now.....This herper at the NC show told me you can sex them pretty easily by feeling there vents....males have a sandpaper feelin aropund their's( for grip I guess!!)hehe.....and the females are smooth around theres, Males also get very lasrge jowls when they are older and females have small ones, but the jowl thing only works if they are bigger!
