Some retro herp pics from 78-80 and other stuff
When I went to NC for a wedding I had to go through some stuff I had stored there and was looking for some of my old herp pics. I could only find a few, but I didn't get through all the stuff in the short time I had to do it. I did however find some of my S.W. herp society news letters and scanned them in because they are somewhat interesting to see the prices of snakes that people had for sale back then like Brazilian rainbow boas for $20 ea. etc. It was a different herp world back then for sure. ANother interesting thing was that we were trying to educate the public and bring to light the benifits of snakes, lizards etc. I am sure that everyone will gain something from these news letters even if it is just a good laugh.
The pictures show Tom Crutchfield, and yes that is me standing behid him and assisting (and looking typically bored for a 14 year old) him with the snakes. Another one shows one of my red rats trying to eat me which I found amusing back then. And the one with me in the tank top was out at Fisheating Creek on one of my many herp adventures. Sorry I couldn't find them all because I have a bunch more with my own snakes from back then in them like my retic, balls, boas etc.
Enjoy the pics.

Oh yea, the burm pictured was Tom's girl Sylvia. She was 18ft. and 300+lbs but gentle as a lamb. Well that is unless she was sitting on a pile of eggs that is.

Come on guys, this post was not supposed to be a Bash Tom Crutchfield post. It was just me showing some old pictures and some news letters from the original S.W. Fla. herp society that I thought might be interesting to some of you. None of you knew him personally so you don't really know anything about the man except what you have read. So please keep you comments about Tom to your selves.
Thank you.

It was not bashing Crutchfield. Dont get so defensive. He seems to have a sense of humor about the whole situation. After all, he ran the ad in Reptiles Magazine that was basically:
CRUTCHFIELD IS BACK
THIS MONTH'S SPECIAL (t-shirts)

Sorry, I must have missed that issue. What month was that?
And you must understand that I have even lost jobs after having mentioned his name and that I knew him. That was way back when I was just a teenager but it seems to be the general attitude by most people still.

It was several years ago when he first came back on the scene. I am sure it is one of my old issues since I have not had a subscription in several years. It was a black and white ad on the right side page. I have heard some interesting stories about him, but have not met anyone that "cursed his name" so to speak.

You can tell that's from the late 70's...even the snake had sideburns.

Yea, it was a different time then for sure. If you notice in the picture of the corn snake there is an 8 track player on the shelf behind me. Actually I still have it stored at my parents in their attic along with the tapes. I don't think I will be retrieving that though.
