Blast from the Past Pics
Swampy just emailed this one to me. This is from probably 5 years ago or so. I went up to Mike Knight's reptile shop, Hotlanta Reptiles, to get some feeders I think. Swampy (Chad) probably had the same idea. But we ended up on our way to Ft. Lauderdale Florida to pick up a load of hots from Mardi Snipes of Coastal Reptiles. After about 13 hours, we got to Mardi's house at 4 am, and he was there to greet us with a smile and a beer. We hung out for a while, but we all were soon out like lights.
The next morning we headed off to do some buying in Florida. We went to Mario's place, Zoological Imports 2000. The animals were amazing. And after Mardi finished sexing all of Mario's baby Taipans , we took a tour. The 2 toed Sloth was a blast and the Anteater was by far the messiest animal I have ever seen. He had amphibians I had never heard of, venomous I had never seen in person, and nonvenomous that were amazing (Water Pythons were a rarety then). But the highlight was his personal pet, a Black Panther. Here he is when we saw him.
I am sure he is much larger by now.
After Zoological Imports, we went over to see Tanyth Tyrr (MsTT). Her collection was emaculate. And we all headed to Reptile World owned by George Van Horn. His serpentarium was fantastic and after the "pre-show" of getting to play with an Eastern Indigo, we watched his milking program. Anyone who is thinking of keeping hots needs to see a full grown Eastern Diamondback being milked! The copious amounts of venom injected at such velocity would make anyone shiver. We waited at the souvenir shop for him to be available and picked up a few things. We finally got to talk with him and I got a Picture from his shop autographed.
After at least half an hour (of mainly Mardi talking to him), it was about time to head back to Georgia. But we did pull him aside for this last picture. From left to right: Swampy, BWSmith, Mike Knight, George Van Horn, Mardi Snipes.
By that time, we already had a vanload of pointy snakes from Mardi and others. Everything from Gaboons, Rhinos, Kraits, Mambas, Rattlers, Puffs, Cobras, and Bush Vipers to Death Stalker Scorpions and a few Boas We drove VERY carefully But it was by far one of the most memorable herp related trips I have taken. There are a hundred more memories from this trip that I dont have time to share here. Just thought I would share.

We probably all know how George lost his finger. The question is which species took it?

If memory serves, it was a Copperhead. But I am not 100% sure. I am sure it was native and it suprised me given the species he works with. Some kid actually asked if he cut his own finger off so he could hold the snakes better.

Seeing a panther use a normal litter box was a riot. | |
