You should really check out jpg.com its a magazine and every month they have great articles about all different aspects of photography. And you can sign up and download the mag for free online....
Anyway the whole concept is that they put out 3 themes and users submit photos, users vote on what gets published.

Long story short....Here's a nice How to for a Poor mans Macro....for those that are so inclined.......
