Mag,
If you're a typical camera user, you'll want to find a camera that has the best OPTICAL zoom ( NOT digital zoom) you can afford; along with macro, ASA/ISO of at least 400 and a decent built-in flash. SD memory is the most expensive. Compact Flash is the cheapest.
I would suggest you visit http://www.dpreview.com and use the Buying Guide. You can pick and choose a lot of features -- including budget. They also have some great reviews -- including user reviews. Let me know if you have other questions.

Here's a link (for anyone who finds this older thread) about the differences between optical zoom and digital zoom.
Difference between optical and digital zoom
THANKS to Nikon for providing the info!

I have never owned a point and shoot digital until recetly. But with doing shows and stuff, I really don't like leaving my case full of expensive D100 equipment laying around and it's quite heavy to haul so I bought a little 3.1 mp olympus Camedia D-550 zoom off of ebay for 66 bucks so I can have something that will fit in my pocket and I can snag snapshots. I took it camping this past weekend and was very satisfied with the image quality. Here is a box turtle I found while out looking for gopher tortoise burrows.
I really can't imagine it being any sharper.
I just snagged another pocket sized digicam off ebay to try out too. It's a little canon A-something. I think it's 3 mp too. I got the camera, case, 2 batteries, charger, all cables and software for 5 bucks! ...because the guy spelled canon "canion" in his auction title so noone saw his auction or bothered clicking it open lol. Typos rule! It's not here yet though.

Very cool pic JS, great deal on the camera too. Hope Mr. canion sends you your $5 camera, btw would shipping actually cost more than the camera itself?
While I love my canon to death I miss actually being able to hold actual pictures sometimes
