rats and rabbits are pets too, why such a difference with a kitten? ok, i hate cats but shouldnt all animals be equal too? i dont get mad when a stork eats a snake, or a snake eats a rabbit, its all part of the food chain. so I dont really care when an animal dies FOR THE RIGHT REASON, such as food for a lion or somethin, I must be coldblooded too RP

I'm not going to touch on whether or not cats are an acceptable food source again....the thing to keep in mind is whether this guy was in violation of the local laws... " Kentucky Revised Statue 525.130, which says a person is guilty of cruelty to animals if he or she “intentionally or wantonly (a) subjects any animal to or causes cruel or injurious mistreatment through abandonment, ... causing it to fight for pleasure or profit, (including, but not limited to being a spectator or vendor at an event where a four-legged animal is caused to fight for pleasure or profit), mutilation, beating, torturing, tormenting, failing to provide adequate food, drink, space, or health care, or by any other means; or (b) Subjects any animal in his custody to cruel neglect; or (c) Kills any animal" (Tricia Bray, Somerset Kentucky Commonwealth Journal, 9/6/01)
This still leaves some room for debate...namely where under section A it says "any animal"
However, I don't feel that is was so much the choice of animal as the manner in which it was done that makes it a cruelty case.
Let the debate continue....

Like I said he was showing off and that its what makes it so bad! If it was in the privacy of his home then no one would have known and he wouldn't have been caught, but doing it in a public place is what has him in trouble!

Never mind the Letter of the Law. This guy is a sicko and should do 5 years and/or be fined at least $5,000.00
I don't like Cat's at all, I used to keep racing pigeons and they were a constant pain, killing birds worth many hundreds of pounds. However, what this guy did was just pure sick. I wouldn't even live feed a rodent unless the life of my snake depended on it. It's just downright unnecessarily cruel and in 90% of cases just doesn't need to be done. Don't mis-understand me, anybody that live feeds because their snake won't take dead, fair enough. People that do it just to get a kick out of it shouldn't be keeping animals at all.

I'll go ahead and take on the image of the bad guy too... for schlits n' giggles
all things considered, an animal's an animal... If asked, do you think a rat would see some hypocricy in what ya'll are saying?..
Dont get me wrong, I'd never feed a cat to one of my snakes, as I have a freezer stocked with some giant rabbits (thanx Marini).. it's just, a life is life, regardless of the body its stuck inside..
I will say though that feeding during store hours is definatly in poor taste...

This person was totally wrong for feeding the cat to the snake in the store with customers in it. I have always been a firm believer that if someone doesn't want to see somthing, no one should force it in their face. this guy is the type of person that destroys the reputation for herpers everywhere. he's probably the kinda' guy that would take a large constrictor on a walk downtown in the middle of everybody just for the attention. however, cows for the most part, are made for us to eat. so are feeder rabbits, and rodents. Deer, elk, and duck..ect are not made for us to eat, and are all beautiful animals, but we hunt them, and eat them anyway. I think feeding a cat to a snake is not a big offence as most people think. however, I don't know the nutritional value of cats either. in my opinion the only acceptable reason to feed a cat to a snake is if it will be euthanized anyway. then, how can you be sure it is good for your snake? we already know that rabbits, and rodents are a healthy food sorce. I think that feeding cats to snakes is wrong (in general) but not just because they are cats, that should have no bearing on the subject. even feeder rabbits have the same feelings as cats. just my .02-Juggalo

Deer, elk and duck arent made for us to eat?
Your great-grandpappy was eating deer long before Krogers was selling Chef-Boy-R-D..
Animals are meant to be eaten, its just nature. Pythons have been known to eat Leopards, so apparently cats are on their menu. The only "fault" of this owner is that he did it during store hours. More than likely he's an ignorant person when it comes to snakes, but just because cats are a little cuter than a rabbit or rat, doesnt mean their meat is any less nutritional, or less fit for becoming a meal
Atleast the cats body was able to be used in a positive way, so it didnt die in vain.. as opposed to being shot up with some poison, and then burned into ash by a furnace at the local pound..
This reminds me of the inner city boy, who when asked where milk comes from, he responds, "a carton"... Deer tastes good... Ive never tried elk... and you best believe if a duck is near me, Im going to eat it given the chance..(marinated in italian dressing...mmmmm, good)

I ment they are not "manufactured" like cows, or chickens. I was raised on venicen (even though I don't know how to spell it!) and elk, my dad and I are hunters. -Juggalo

I think you all are anthropomorphisizing - giving human characteritics to animals, such as feelings. No one knows for sure 100% that animals have feeling like we do.
Anyway, the only point I see here is it was fed live. If it was prekilled, I see absolutely no difference between a cat and a rabbit or a rat or a mouse. Cats just happen to have been domesticated for a very long time, which somehow makes them better? That's bull.
I think if he fed a live rabbit to his snake in front of customers, he should have been brought up on the same charges.

Unfortunately, it doesn't really matter what we think, it's what the general populous think. And they think that Cats are different to Rats/Rabbits, end of story. A few of my friends have been at my house when I've been feeding and not one of them has so much as lifted an eyebrow when the ol' ratsickles come out of the freezer. On the other hand, had I produced a bag of dead cats I'm sure at least one or two of them would have had something to say.
It's time we all stopped debating whether one life is different from another and realised that the general public will never accept the "needless slaughter" of "domestic" animals when there are easily obtained and more socially acceptable alternatives.
The guy who did this is probably just some egotistical w****r who thought it would be cool to shock some people. He deserves everything he gets and probably more besides.

Venicin is awesome... best in stew (I have no clue how to spell it either)..
Ok...heres a question... If I took a cute little duck.. and walked it past all these people in the pest store... and tossed it to a hungry burm, and the burm did what it does.... what would yall say?? What do you think the "general public" would think??
Now...suppose I took that same duck... and walked it past a few groups of people sitting in an oriental resturant.... took a hatchet to its head, and proceded to cook it up right in front of the customers eating appetizers in anticipation..on one of those "grill table things"... What would yall say to that? What do you think the "general public" would say???
Same duck....same outcome... different mouths... How hypocritical is that???
