David, It IS funny how that works isn't it. As soon as an animal grows fur it's life is suddenly worth more . I personally have different variations on the same petsmart, petco, (same "ethics" differrent store....) story.
The best thing to do is tell the employees, managers, and whoever is there about RTB.net, If they blow you off call the local SPCA.

When I got my first critter a while back I "trusted" the pet store to tell me what I needed. After all they sell them they have know something about them??
I have found that every one of them around here will tell you anything you want to hear. Funny thing is, they don't really know what they are saying, they just take what you say and spin it.
Me: So is this good?
Them: Oh yea, that is exactly what I would say you need!
Me: So what about this?
Them: Yes that is good to, either one would be great!
Me: So which would you think is better for me to use?
Them: This one over here.
Its because of that that I went to the net and happened to find this site. Now I have some info and always like asking questions just for the fun of it. 9 out of 10 times they will stand there and sweat or they will have to go get someone and they really don't know.
The question that gets the most fun: Can you tell me the nutritional difference between a rat and a mouse and why one is better than the other?
LOL, I am evil I know, but its fun to watch them squirm, and if it really puts them in a pinch, perhaps they will look it up. If they do, perhaps they wont be as stupid to the next person.
Just my two cents

Unfortunately, every time a law is brought up to ban reptiles (and other exotics too) - the SPCA supports it. HSUS has already been campaigning to have reptiles banned as pets for the last decade or more. These groups are not on our side and won't even touch cruelty cases involving reptiles - as I so wonderfully found out last week.

People you should hear this story I go to a PETCO and their Reptile guy in dreads and lokks like he is on crack. I ask the regular questions about a Tokay gecko like light PC answer no lighting needed as in no heat bulbs either, Hides PC one of those coconut things, eclosure PC THE LEOPARD GECKO SETUP. Then I ask to see one of the tokays close up to look at a lesion on its leg wich I have seen on the Gecko for a Month. The idiot says their aggressive and bite yet he sticks his bare hand in and attempts to catch the gecko and there are two in the cage the geckos see the hand and both snap with suprissing speed for being a skeleton and the guy screems I could barely keep my stupid appearance up I wanted to say take your own advice, and put some food and water in the cage. Note I hate this Petco I have gone there and been ased several questions several times from behind and when I turn people realize I don't work there and I don't know about you but this I consider an insault. Also I have had many interventions where a unknowing buyer is telling their kid they will get them an animal and ask for a setup from PC THAT DON'T WORK. I go over and start mumbling to myself intending for the buyer to hear me about the animal and they hear it and get the right setup even if it means I go through the stupid store and lay every thing out for them. I don't think that if some one that buys an animal and then at the same time buys a setup should be stuck with a idot sales person. I want the animal no matter where it came from to have a better life in some ones hmoe and getting a PC setup is wrong and all you boa and python people have seen those short 20 gallon tanks the sell with a hot rock and sand and a mini hide and say it will last the life of your pet. Petco is a NO no

are you sure it was a petsmart? they normally don't carry or sell anything they can't properly house or care for. weather their babies or full grown. I have gotten Info about the PetSmart chain of stores from my neighbor who is a manager at our local PetSmart. she stated and I quote " if they are upset about the lack of knowledge , false info, or any form of poor care don't hesitate to call the corporite office." She also said that they don't deal with any type of monitors. So that's why I ask if you're sure it was PetSmart. But I do agree that there are too many idiots calling themselves Reptile Specialist when they don't Know jack about any reptiles even turtles. now that's sad

From PETsMART Pet Care Dept. Manager:
I just wanted to inform you all that PETsMART does not sell feeder critters for the sole reason that we believe that there are other ways to properly satisfy your animals' nutrional needs. I don't necesarily agree with that, but also keep in mind that we do offer the names of stores that DO supply feeder critters.
Also, if you DO have a concern about a store, we do ask that you contact the Careline phone number. This number is posted by all animal habitats in ALL stores. You can also ask to speak with a manager as well. We are always happy to listen to your concerns about the animals in our care. If we can't ddirectly fix it, we make sure we contact the people who can.
As for the "monitors," as was previously posted, PETsMART, best to my knowledge, does not sell things that are that large. The largest reptiles that I know we sell at Iguanas and Blue Tongue Skinks. However, we make sure we can properly house them.
We will not carry snakes because we will not feed them. We will not carry things like rabbits and ferrets unless we can properly house them. We care about our pets in our care. THis is our responsibilty, we take it as seriously as you do with yours.
We also respect the fect that you choose to own snakes (wonderful creatures that they are, my neighbors have many and I do truly enjoy handling them), and ask that everyone respects our decisions to not carry or sell certain critters.
I can tell you everything you all need to know about things in our care, so please feel free to ask. . . let blu93stang know, and I will look into it for you.
