Hi I am newbie to this whole thing, but after reading and researching here and other sites, and talking to breeders, I realize that a pet store in my area doesn't know a whole lot about taking care of reptiles. For one when I was going to buy a
corn snake, I asked them (on the phone) what type they were. (Snow, Normal, okatee, ...) They told me "red". I said are they bloodreds, and she said "no just red". I went to look at them and they were normal hatchlings, very small. I asked them if they had any heating pads and they informed me that they carry them, but they would recommend using HOT ROCKS. I knew after reading and researching that Hot Rocks are the worst that you could use for a snake, or any reptile. He said that he has been using them for 30 years, and never had a problem. He said that the undertank heating pads cause belly burns on snakes. Needless to say I did not purchase my corn or anything else from him. My corn came from South Mountain Reptiles, and my supplies from somewhere else. I for one would never buy any animal from a Pet Store. A knowledgeable breeder is the best choice. I don't know if I should mention the name of this store, I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but if you are from this area, it is not a big chain, it is just 2 small stores, one in Beaver Falls, and one in Aliquippa.
