Petco...oh no!!!!!!!!!!!
BCI MAN and I went to Warrenton Petco and found some very odd things. We first noticed that there was a sign it said General Geckos. What could be in the cage but............ NOTHING. Then the same thing happened at the tree frog cage. Then we asked to see the Texas Rat Snake. The man got it out and it was none other than a baby yellow rat snake. We argued with the man and he insisted that it was a texas rat snake. So we left.

I guess Petcos nationwide really are pathetic.
My best Petco story was when I had a conversation with the employee in charge of all the reptile affairs at my local Petco. I told him I have a 9 foot retic and he replied "I know all about retics, isn't that the snake that constricts or is it the snake that bites with teeth , Ron White is right (you really can't fix stupid)

Many Petco employees are hired at near minimum wage, and may not know anything about reptiles.
It may be, that if you try to show them some stuff without putting them down, you might spark an interest.
Yeah, some of them are stuck up and think they know more than they do.
But some of them might be interested. I've said for years that biz cards made up with the web addresses of major reptile sites could be kept on hand, and given to those who might benefit. Good for the people, good for the sites, and most of all, good for the critters.

We try to not think of the obvious solution to our answers because sometimes the obvious hurts more!

Re: Petco...oh no!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't find Petco to be better or worse than most pet stores. I don't think that you can go to a pet store that doesn't specialize in one specific animal and expect a min wage employee to be an expert in everything they sell. I don't know one specialty shop that is open til 9pm on sundays. Not around here at least. Petco has it's advantages as well as its disadvantages.

Re: Petco...oh no!!!!!!!!!!!
The Petco here a couple years ago was selling two of what they called "blue racers" but they were clearly black racers, a native WV species.

Actually I kept looking in until I found a really dull snargly Tokay-looking-thing! The tree frog general cage had a green tree frog, which are indigeonous. [illegal to sell in VA]

I always thought blue racers were a color form of the black, could be wrong though. Are native species illegal to sell in WV like they are in VA?

Re: Petco...oh no!!!!!!!!!!!
You have to have a permit to keep any native species here. I don't know about selling them, but I would imagine you would need a permit for that too...

here, you don't need a permit, but stores cannot sell native species (like painted turtles)

Re: Petco...oh no!!!!!!!!!!!
Well they were obviously getting away with it by calling them a different species.
