Are there regulations that a pet store has to follow when it comes to humanely caring for their animals and the cleanliness of the store?

Let me tell you why I ask. There is a pet store in our mall that's rather nasty. Two of my snakes came from this place, and I have been blessed to be able to have them end up healthy. (If you'd like me to explain why I bought them there I will sometime). In the last few months it's been getting very very bad. Lemme tell you the conditions that these animals are in...

First of all you walk into this store and the stench of poop hits you. Mabey I can smell it/identify it better because a lof of my family farms and I've had pets for a long time, but it's the stale, old, nasty poop smell. I almost got sick when I walked in today.

They keep puppies in cages that are about 2x2 feet, in one case there was two puppies in such a cage today. (Golden Retriever and american bulldog). The reptiles are even worse. The smaller snakes (such as corn and king snakes) are kept at the check out desk. No heating, and the water looks very stale. They are about twice as long as the length of their little pet homes. It's sad. The larger snakes are kept in the back in nasty looking cages. The bedding looks very old, and there is poopy all over the place. I dunno if they *EVER* clean these cage...God it is so disgusting. I almost asked them if I could look at their Red tail babies (like I was interested in buying the) so I could look for scale rot and mites. Partially out of cruiosity, partially to explain to them how sick their snakes could be and that they most likely were not going to sell.

Ick ick ick. I feel so sorry for those snakes...ICK!
