Re: Petco, Bad Exp!
Sorry I haven't been on lol. I did read everybody's post though . Internet was down, AGAIN. I need a new server I sware, Its been down almost everyday this week. I called and they blamed It on the weather. I'm sorry, I thought I said my "internet" not Direct TV people. Grr! It prolly is the weather but then i lack the right to complain LOL. I can't give up that luxury right now . Anyways, well there are tons of stores around here. But there just as worse, you know its REALLY sad when even the private owned people have bad housing! My friend wanted to open a shop and I told her it would be for the best. She would be the only "caring" person in the darn city! So to me, should I pay somebodys house payment. Or go to some big place that could careless if they loose me or not. Sorry If it sounds cruel to those who own there own shops (my respect to you). But when your running a small reptile shop, not treating your animals right to cash in $$. You really need every customer, I turn away. Honestly Petco Is a BIG company, do you really think it matters If I walk past them the once in a mile times I go there? I use sand *SHH they have tiles over it peeps* lol. NO its not Calci-w.e either, different sand... anyways.
I even tried the Lumber stores (They sometimes carry playground sands and beach type sands). They didn't have it, and the guy quoted the price like $5 a bag MORE than Petco. I know its scarey but true lol. Because it would be a special "order" and I would have to cover Sales Profit and Shipping. So I said bite me and went to Petco . Also I've NEVER bought something, ok lied lol. Wait, like 3 years ago I bought a friend a BD (Bearded Dragon) for her birthday. ONLY because I couldn't find a "decent" priced one online. But thats it, I sware . I never buy live animals from them, as much as I'd love to help them out. I understand your point, I'm just giving them dollar to go get more. I would out of all unfairness, sacrifice 1 sick animal in the name of health of 5 others. It may sound cruel, but because of your pitty you could of cost another how many batch of little animals. Because you wanted to "save" he/she, when its prolly going to rack up about $300 in vet bills and die in a few months anyways.
I told this lady at the groomers (hey, I got doggies man!). She called me heartless and I had no remorce? Her husband (he told my boyfriend, boyfriend told me) went out back with out any care and shot there Pit Bull. WHY?!?! Because he was tired of the neighbors harrasing him about owning a Pit Bull. But I'm heartless, No REMORCE because I care about animals that are not already sick and I could keep that way by not buying a Petco animal. Then SHE told me she burned the dog and flushed his ash's down the toilet!!! Your kidding me right lol, not only is that horrible and that poor little dog. But then you tell me a respected pet owner I'm cruel. I've never shot, burned and flushed my dog down the potty! What is wrong with stores, and people and people think they can be big stores, or act like them. GET A REAL JOB!!! I have all the love for people who have nice runned and kept up Reptile Shacks/shops/stores. But for those who couldn't give a crap and just in it for money. Meet my rifle then meet my snake, oh and by the way she eats dead prey. So we'll just toss you in there with a shot gun wound and see how being ate half alive if not dead by a 16FT retic . Ok a little out there, but seriously lol, people grow up or get some help. **rollseyes**

Re: Petco, Bad Exp!
Um...imagining people dying is no better than people killing animals imo. Sounds like irrational ranting. Even a full grown reticulated python is not able to eat a human anyways.
Petco's in my area are very well kept and clean and the people who work there are knowledgeable. Once in a while you see an animal that has mites, but they usually take it out once they notice it. It depends where it is. Petco's in bad neighborhoods tend to have sicker animals cause they just hire anyone looking for a paycheck.
And a big enclosure isn't everything. There is a pet store in my area that maintains their reptiles extremely well. Yes, they are put into small/very small enclosures, but they are healthy and well maintained. Their cages are extremely clean, and they take proper quarantine measures and etc. I had a ball python from one of them that was wild caught, and they did not have worms, mites, other parasites, RI and never missed a meal, all verified by the vet. They even take in sick reptiles from customers that can't take care of them and nurse them back to health.

Re: Petco, Bad Exp!
Just to back up and replay - You don't use sand as substrate for your boa, right?
There is LOTS of documentation for why sand as a lizard substrate is bad. In my opinion, anyone who choses to use sand as a substrate for any lizard is willfully disregarding the risk at the potential expense of their pet's health in favor of... I have no idea the perceived benefit.
Sand for boas however is simply very very wrong. These animals are from the jungle, not the desert. There are no sandy beaches that boas like to hang out at.
So the moral of the story is: Loose the sand. That is not a good excuse to shop at PetCo.
You told a long story about how you agree with me about not buying animals as "Rescues"... but you made this post because you bought an animal as a "Rescue", right? I am highly confused I suppose.

Re: Petco, Bad Exp!
I think sand is bad for any reptiles, however, Coconut fiber and Calci-sand 50/50 mix seems to be good for tortoises. They eat the substrate and poop to no end! Which is good for them.

Re: Petco, Bad Exp!
I am going to have to disagree with you on that, but this thread is not the time and place.
Calci-sand kills reptiles. The End..

Re: Petco, Bad Exp!
The only type of pet sand might be good for, is a crab.
Heck, even using sand for sand boas is looked down upon, despite their name, it's just the risk of impaction is a risk that you shouldn't ever take. On top of that, sand is quite abraisive and does more damage than good on an animal that's not meant to be on it, or anywhere near it.

Re: Petco, Bad Exp!
Really? I have never had a tortoise that died from impaction. They were on sand/fiber mix. It provides them with a humid microclimate but a dry climate they prefer. I have 3 by the way.
