Pet Store laws by state

I see lots of posts about the conditions at some (most) pet stores. I did a little quick searching to read up on pet store laws to see what kind of standards they are held to. I'm sure most of you have seen this already, but I haven't seen the URL posted yet so figured I'd throw it on here:

Some states have no pet store laws, some have laws but define "pets" as being cats and dogs only, some have very vague laws that merely require "adequate care" or "humane conditions", and others are much more specific.

So, anyway, if you've filed a complaint about your local pet store and nothing was done, it may because nothing can be legally done by the authorities.

Thanks for posting that....I got onto some PetSmart people the other day because they had some Veiled Chameleons with 3% humidity....When I pointed this out they said everytme the mist the cage, it cools it down and they can't keep the temps at 90 arghhhh So I explained that 90 was way too hot anyway and will kill them quicker than the dry conditions...they said ohhhh and misted the cage. They have a pretty cool little hand held mister. They promised to keep it up...I guess we will see.

I made a post awhile back about a BP I found for sale at a PAWN SHOP?!?! The conditions were deplorable!! I called the GDOA and they were out the next day and rescued it. I was very impressed.

OverTech, I agree with you. I did some personal "investigating" and found out that when they DO come in to inspect, they pretty much just look at the overall conditions in an exotics store. They check for enclosure size, paperwork, cleanliness, paperwork, making sure all animals are legal, paperwork, oh, and did I mention paperwork? They do not and are not worried about temperatures, humidity levels, and the sort. BUT, if you sell mammals, i.e. cats and dogs, THEN they get more involved, as more laws do apply to those types of pets. It is a shame that we, as reptile owners, continously fight a battle with breaking the stereotypes of repts, and to top it off, we have pet stores tarnishing the image as well. There has got to be something we can do. Just my .02 worth. Oh, and welcome to RTB!!!!
