I DO AGREE PETCO IS THE WORST PET STORE I HAVE EVER SEEN . I LIVE IN CHICAGO AND HAVE BEEN TO 4 AND 3 OF THEM ARE DISGUSTING . THE HEALTH OF THE ANIMALS AND THERE LIVING CONDITIONS JUST MADE ME SICK. THEY HAD A FEW IGUANAS THAT WERE COVERD IN MITES . I TOLD THE MANAGER ABOUT IT AND HE SAID THEY WERE DOTS ? DOTS ? THIS KID WAS ABOUT 15 OR SO. I TOLD HIM I'M NOT STEVE IRWIN BUT I DO KNOW A MITE WHEN I SEE ONE. THEN HE TELLS ME THERE FINE. NOT ONLY IS THE STORE A DISGRACE BUT SO IS THE STAFF. I KNOW IN ILLINOIS THEY HAVE SEVERAL LAWS ABOUT PET STORES AND THE CARE OF ANIMALS. IF YOUR WORNDERING ABOUT STATE LAWS JUST SEARCH FOR PET LAWS IN YOUR STATE AND LOOK FOR PET STORES. I HOPE THIS INFO CAN HELP...... ALSO TALK TO YOUR STATE REPS I'M SURE THEY WOULD LOVE TO HELP....... BRIAN

Welcome to Redtail!
As for petco/Petsmart (whichever) I don't shop there unless it is an emergency type thing that I need and no one else in town has what I need.
But it does look like Lori has infected you with CAPLOCK-ITIS!

I was in Petco yesterday here in Syracuse, NY. They had one very small rtb, no hide, a H2O bowl that was too tall. I felt so bad I wanted to buy it just to get it out of there. They rally have no right selling reptiles, stick to fish.

I guess it just depends on the individual running the place.
The petco here in Springfeild is nice and clean, The employees
are definately misinformed though! There was a lady wanting to
buy a first lizard for her son, and the salesman suggested a nile
monitor! Since they were so easily" tameable" and only grew to "4 foot!"
But their lack of knowledge usually seems to work to my advantage,
I buy alot of arachnids and every spider they sell is either sold as
a rose hair tarantula or a pinktoe, so i have purchased some pretty expensive
spiders for dirt cheap plus they always give me a free critter keeper
cuz they are to scared to transfer the spider to a box!
I love petco!

How can they call themselves "Petsmart"???? when they are as dumb as a box of rocks when it comes down to the treatment of their animals. I might get a few supplies from them but I try not to buy many animals from them.

Here's another winner...PetLand..
If you've talked to me for five minutes you know Im VERY strongly "anti-pet store"... I think just about every one of them should be shut down. Exceptions are the case, but they're usually a one store type of thing, chains are never any good..
There's a joint up the road from me called Noah's Pets. I dont know if its a chain or what but sometimes I go in there to get feeder goldfish for my little psycho Nile when Rare Earth is out of them. Like anyone of yall would do, I head str8 for the "Snake Room" even tho I know I'll end up regretting it... Every time Im there I seriously have to have a discussion with myself of whether or not I should try to swipe some of the animals out of there... worth jail time or a fine? #$%^$%^$%^$%^& yea it is.. I havnt done it yet, it's just not my style, but talk about temptation... All the monitors have sunken eyes, and are just laying there..like they're sleeping. An 'up-to-snuff' monitor is anything but 'sleepy'... the boas look like they havnt eaten in a year... the list goes on.. I literally, "cleanse" myself after everytime I go there before I walk into my Rep. Room... Its pretty sad..
Ya'll think I should try and kidnap a what I can out of there? That should be the next "poll" question...heh.. I know what the reptiles would want me to do.. I know what I want to do.. I'll probably never do it tho, like I said its just not my style..

The Petsmart here in town doesn't sell snakes because they eat mice, but they do sell lizards and an occassional pac-man frog. i was tempted to get hired there when they were hiring a few weeks ago just so i could make the animals healthy but i don't know enough about lizards and i want to work in a place that sells snakes.
anyway the Petland i go to for my mice has some below par lizards and the cages need a cleaning every other time i go in there. i feel so sorry for the plated lizards they have right now . they have a big and little one in a one foot by one half foot enclosure. the little one looks like it's being nipped on by the big one and both look malnurished. i'm just waiting for a possition to open up so i can work there and show them how to take care of their herps (and the occassional questions going to yall ).

Do me a favor, take pictures, notes, write down quotes from the managers and get names. We're working on a project to bring down places like petco. It's a widespread problem that needs to stop. If you take pictures try to get the label in so we can prove it was taken at petco. Thank you.

Hey J.D. I'm with you on the "removing" of the mistreated herps. I saw a really nice looking boa at a reptile show last month, but the thing was very ill. I wanted to get it out of there, but I reallized that I couldn't take it back with me for it could spread its illness to my collection. That would be bad.

Getting a job at a pet store in order to help the animals doesn't work as well as it sounds. I've been working 6th months now at a pet store (none mentioned yet, but I'll leave the name out) and I Still have to ask permission from the manager to feed the snakes, even though he and I are the only people still working there who own snakes, and he is always too 'busy'. Also hearing things like, "Don't take so long feeding the reptiles tonight, I want to get the closing list done quickly." or how about, "Don't feed that Tomato frog more than 2-3 crickets, we don't want it to grow real big, since nobody will buy it then." And get this, he is the guy who brought it in!. He supplies all the reptiles there, but once he has them in the store he seems to lose any care for them. I feel like I'm the only person there who gives a rip about the reptiles, and I only work part time (so I'm not there enough to make a big difference) and I don't know enough just myself to get everything right. I hate it!

Alice??? Why waste time and energy trying to bring down what can, with much less effort be corrected? You will never put together the resources to bring down a multimillion (maybe even multibillion) corporation. And assuming they are all a bunch of ignorant jerks up at corporate, attacks and insults from protesting special interest groups only serve to make them roll their eyes and head for the coffee pot. The old cliche' about flies and honey applies here. Instead of pouring your effort into destroying them...how about putting together something to offer education on reptiles to petco employees. The Petco near me used to be one of the worst I had ever seen. I didn't go in name calling and insulting everyone there. I offered to help and educate the guys that take care of the reptiles...made friends and I get preferential treatment there now...and the place is tip top. Any sick or unhealthy reptile goes to the back room now and once a week or so when I go in, they drag me into the back room and ask for help and suggestions for treatment. They really are trying there to make things right and I am impressed to no end at the improvments they have made. They order frozen rats for me in sizes they normally don't carry...in fact...they didn't even sell frozen rats there until I asked the manager to order some for me. Also...when a rat has pups there...they take the mother and the litter to the back room and save them for me and let me have them all for free. ....I'm rambling now....but the point is...If we all pitch in and try to educate them without insulting them...things will get better.

Julius, no one is trying to insult them. I'm not necessarily trying to bring them down either. I'm trying to collect evidence that there is a widespread problem and demand widespread change. If educating them is the way to go, fine, but it's going to take more politics than that. I know how corporations work, they only make change if it's cost effecient. By showing the world what they are doing, they will lose business, if they want to get it back they will have to make ssome major changes and stick to them. Other organizations have tried the education route, and while I agree that's part of the solution, I really think it's going to take more than that. PetCo isn't stupid, it's just not cost effective to educate the employees and its not cost effective to keep appropriate conditions either. If our actions result in their sales declining dramatically, then it WILL become cost effective for them to set things up right. It's about money for them. THat's the angle we have to use.
