I think I have seen something as bad if not worse than Petco in the pet trade. This past weekend I went to Prehistoric Pets in Fountain Valley, CA and it was horrible to say the least. I saw the dirtiest, moldiest, grossest cages I have ever seen reptiles kept in. There were ants in most of the cages on one wall as well as flies and gnats. Many of the enclosures also had little or no or only dirty water in them. All of them had at least some feces in them and one that I took a picture of was full of it. The pictures I took will be posted hopefully later tonight. It was just plain filthy. And thats not to mention they feed live rodents to their snakes as some sort of show. They have a little auditorium set up for customers to watch it. During the 10 minutes I checked out this area I saw 2 live rats placed in blood python enclosures, only one of which was taken by the snakes. I guess they claim to be some sort of zoo. They did have a lot of customers in there whether to just look or to purchase animals, but I felt bad for them as well as the animals. There were so many "bad" things going on there that it would probably take me about 10 times as long as this post is to list them. In short, it is a dispicable place that is exploiting animals as well as the people that keep them in business.
I want to know what everyone elses experiences are with Prehistoric Pets. I also want to encourage everyone to boycott any business associated with this place and to encourage everyone they know to watch out for this shady business.
I dont know what can be done but I would personally like to see Prehistoric Pets shut down. If anyone else agrees or would somehow like to give me some advice on how to improve the situation for these animals please respond to this post, or if you dont want to say it in a public forum like this email me at jjshiv@hotmail.com.

call the A.S.P.C.A. belive it or not they will more than likely go check the place out. At least that will let the owner know that someone out there is watching what goes on in his store and is concerned.
Try writing an annoyomous, or not so annonymous letter to the establishment outlining what the problems are and how to fix them. If you are tactful and respectful you might be surprised how much difference you may make.
If you really want to go out there and cause some trouble, peaceably assemble outside the store and picket there, with signs about the horrible treatment of the animals. If you do it on public property and do it in a peaceful manner, they can't stop you.
Just some thoughts off the top of my head...

There is a post on them in the BOI. Many others have reported them to the Humane Society, Fish and Game, etc. and NOTHING has been done.
Go to the BOI and post your experience!

I've never been to the CA location. But I do know that there is also a Prehistoric pets in Colorado Springs, CO that is AWSOME. Great herps, Great care. Thy spend hours with each individual purchasing a herp to help them decide what pet is best for them, and each individual species care. If your ever in CO SPGS, check them out. I doubt they are connected in any way. Just some worthless info -Juggalo

I think that most of these pet store chains are just under a franchise single name, subjected to common policies and such, but rented out to whoever wants to run them. How an individual store is run is up to the store keeper and he is responsible for the stock, and I don't think the whole overseeing franchise is really responsible. Just a thought, but the CA store does ought to be shut down.

What buttheads! Well. You can post the number and address and ask for people to call and write. I would spend a few dollars to call out of state myself. Is this a Private owner? If you wanted people to take notice you could hold a protest out in front (near) the store, not on the Property. Hold up signs stating the condition of the cages and that they feed live pray to the snakes. If anyone would take notice the owners would. People coming into the store would look around to see the mess. This takes time. One to get the people to show up to the protest and two a good full few hours of your Sat. The outcome would either the owners would clean up the place or with more people making calls they could very well close the place down. My guess is that they would clean the cages up and pray no one else noticed. Just my 2 cents. Protest have worked for me when I wanted to add a little heat to a cause I felt deepy about.
