Petco SPY
So here I go to work for the enemy. I just had an interview at Petco and I know I got the job. I'm going to end up being the reptile specialist. I'm not all that thrilled about this but I really need the money at the moment and having a small employee discount is always nice. At least I know that this Petco takes their animals to the vets, as I used to work for the Vet clinic that cares for their animals. SO I will let you all know the good and the bad of the Petco corporation from the inside.

Re: Petco SPY
Maybe you can make a difference at that store Congrats on finding a job that you will at least be able to enjoy and make money at the same time
Petco generally sucks BUT if you are working there, you can take great care of the critter's A win-win situation! You get a paycheck and they get cared for by some one who knows/cares for reptiles!
Congrats!

Re: Petco SPY
I don't know for sure, but I don't think Petco is the "enemy". It sounds like some areas have a management problem. Maybe you can help, so this is great news.

I agree with mpgt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! did I actually type that!!, lol, just kidding. Sure Petco sucks in some ways, but at the same time, as with any big business, they take an awful lot of shots just for the sake of something to complain about.
I have had mixed dealings with them and have had complaints of my own, but you have no reason to be ashamed of being a petco worker no matter what a few on here might say....now go join peta and I might have a different post for you, lol.

Re: Petco SPY
I was just being silly about the enemy thing. I am still employed at a small pet store, that is sadly going out of business, so in that sense I am working for the enemy. I know i will enjoy the job somewhat and will make sure the animals are well taken care of and hopefully sold to people who will take care of them. What I need to work on is to convince them to switch who supplies their animals. A lot of the time the animals arrive ill and have to be treated before being sold. But I might not have a choice, like selling iguanas. The manger was forced to order them because they sell.

Re: Petco SPY
My girlfriend (sixth_sense) works for PetCo, and let me tell EVERYONE, that I can't go into ANY PetCo without wanting to commit multiple felonies...I have YET to find competant employees. Prices are outrageous on everything that I have needed. The reptiles are in disarray, constantly having mites everywhere on everything. I even had an employee tell me that I couldn't hold one of the BPs because I might drop it, this even after I told her that i OWNED snakes, and after my GF berated the manager for being stupid.
Best of luck Genevieve, I genuinely hope you can make a positive difference.

Re: Petco SPY
well its been about a month since I've been there and so far things are looking all right. The people at Petco are pretty cool and All of us has a problem with the corporation itself. There are so many little things that we are forced to do that aren't good for the animals. Like keeping baby beardies and leopard geckos on sand. Our fish are terrible but again thats the fault of the design of the aquarium units themselves and the lack of knowledge in fish. I am going to write to corporate headquarters about Iguanas and rescue organizations for iguanas. It would be nice to have an iguana rescue come to the store like the greyhound rescues ect...

Re: Petco SPY
if any of you has am idea on how to get through to the corporation or know of any reptile rescues that would be interested in doing a store visit that would be great. It doesn't even have to be the Petco I work at, any one of the 1,500 around the country would do.

Re: Petco SPY
Generally, I find that Petcos(or at least the one by me) employ decent and enthusiastic people. I just don't think they place their "specialists" in the right areas.
Every time I walk in to snag some feeders, I always pop by the reptile displays. I can count on one hand how many times I've found a snake that _didn't_ have stuck shed or vast amounts of feces in his cage. I've complained, and sometimes I feel driven enough to apply for employment just so I know the animals are getting the care they deserve.

Re: Petco SPY
A lot of the time the animals arrive in bad condition and then we have to deal with the results. We have a very skinny baby ball that will be going to the vets this week. And the iguanas are too small and get sick easily. I have no idea why we even sell Tokay geckos but we do.
The people I work with each have their area of expertise but we don't have one person for each animal section. We have to wander around and help whomever needs it. If the questions get really complicated we try to give them to the person who knows the most about what the customer wants. But that isn't always possible or the person isn't on that day.
