Okay I am the first to admit that the chain stores are not very good for their reptiles for a plethera of different reasons but the Petco near my house was really impressing me lately. The cages always had hides and fresh water, as a matter of fact they even had so much 'stuff' (plants, hides, etc) that it was difficult to tell if they even had anything at all in their cages. You almost never saw and animal. And when you did they all looked pretty good! Nice healthy little
BPs and redtails. They clean the cages every Sunday afternoon. They even have little signs posted on the outside of the tanks saying
Petco highly recommends feeding your snake Frozen thawed prey. It is much safer and helps to prevent injury. (or something worded really close to this)
But as 2 little old women were peeking at the
BPs while the guy was cleaning their cage, one of the women asked "Why is he trying to get up to that light?" Her friend replied "I have been reading about them and they need the heat from the light to stay healthy" The employee cut in and replied "You are wrong they don't need any heat, he's going up there for the UV. They need UV light to survive, it helps them digest their food. They don't need anymore heat than your house probably already has, so you will need a bulb light JUST to provide UV rays"
I had to think that at least the little
BP will get a bulb (HEAT) even though the new prospective owners thought it was for UV. But just at that point The 60 or so year old woman put the little twerp in his place. She LOUDLY informed him that he didn't have half a brain in his head. And as she started about setting him straight I slipped away and let her take over.............she obviously knew what she was talking about.
Although as a side note -- the care sheets they have say right at the top if you aren't able to feed live prey to a snake then a snake probably isnt for you. I wonder why that hasn't been changed when they have the 'Petco highly reccommends...." signs on all of the enclosures?
After leaving Petco (the frozen feeders were a little high priced) I went to another local pet store. They are usually more knowlegable but still really work a nerve with me (that's where I got my albino burm) and they just got more caimen's in. After a few minutes of HIGH PRESSURE SALESMANSHIP I refused and asked how many they have managed to sell and they said 7 just this last week!!!! Now don't get me wrong I know some ppl can handle having an alligator or croc as a pet BUT probably not in my neighborhood. And they were happy to send one out the door with anyone who had the cash.....
I guess I will have to make sure the dog starts sleeping inside soon......
