Man Oh Man"""" Everyone who thinks people that dont know jack about taking care of animals shouldnt own pet stores RAISE YOUR HAND!!! MAn Ive been to every pet shop in thes and surrounding area pet shops and I dont think there is one here that owners and workers have a lick of sence. I mean come on how hard is it to figure out that three rats is a bit too much for a little snake. Oh yea and that 24Beardie eggs are fragile and need extra special care.. Is there any Organizations that will enforce guidelines or what?

Yeah that is a fact known thatthey arein it for the money. the majorityof them don't know jack about reptiles or anythingelse. Unfortunately there is not much we can do. The fact is we need them as much as I hate to admit it. I need them for the ratts they produce If I could manage to getmy breeding colony of ratts back upmI doubt I would ever step foot in another pet store.

yeah, and she forgot to mention that someone at the pet store put a LIVE mouse, that was way too big in with the Tegu she's buying today. guess what happend.....yep! whammo! right on the nose, broken scales and blood. these people think it is a black and white tegu monitor that eats ONLY rodents. it is in fact a BLACK tegu, totally seperate from the monitor species that is omnivorus. GGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR . oh yeah, and did you know that "redtail boas" grow up to 18 feet?!?!?! the pet store maintains they have seen it. The only thing you can possibly do is educate them, or get a job at one...
Print them some care sheets and get them to read them and put copies in a file for employee education if possible. Maybe even post them on the tanks with the animals too.
Unfortunately, pet stores will be around forever, thanks to our needs and the publics ignorance.

that's what I did today, I printed up a whole bunch of info about the difference in tupanimbus teguixin, and tupanimbus merianea (black tegus, and black and white tegus). they are selling it for the price a black and white (argentina) tegu should be. it's a black (columbian). I talked to the owner of the store, he said he would not go down in price. IMO this is TERRIBLE business ethics. his reasoning behind it is "the tegu monitor was sold to me as a black and white, so thats what Im selling it as." so I have to pay for his ignorance????? how does that work?? how hard is it to spend 5 min. on the internet and bring up some really basic info on a pet you'r trying to sell? I know, I know if I am not happy with the price, then don't buy it. but this particular tegu is absolutly the calmest tegu I've ever seen. she'll just hand out on you with no problems! I have never heard him even huff, like they're known for. so we really want this particular one. done ranting for now. -Juggalo

oh yeah, we also told the store that we don't want ANYONE but us to touch him. so for one week, we are taking care of him in the pet store. I would be very ashamed if I owned a pet store and got this request. I'll be willing to bet they just see it as "well now we don't have to spend any money on food!" -Juggalo

I hate saying this but I tend to agree, most of the stores I have gone to are a shame. I can only hope that in my venture in to the pet shop world will be a different one. This is why I am spending a year in preparation. One thing I would love to do is invite some of you for your advice and critiques when I do open. My advantage is I'm not in it for the money.

I plan to open a herp shop also. but I got to take some classes first. my shop is going to have a caresheet for every herp right there in public view, and all latin names with common names in paenthesis. just a couple Ideas, as long as someone really cares about the animals and is willing to put some effort forth, they should have an excellent shop. -Juggalo

I'm so glad we don't have this issue here ,(in Oz)
saddens me to see these topics coming up
again & again .

Ifear its a matter of time before it becomes the practice
for pet stores to sell herps legally here.

I agree about the care sheets, but since I will be selling mostly only my own CB snakes I will not sell to anyone that I don’t think will take good care of them. I've had my share of moronic advise from shop owners and workers. Thought my knowledge of reptiles is less than perfect I do know burms get bigger than 5' and my partner is marine biologist he will deal with the fish part. I have also already invested well over 20k just in caging with proper heat gradients and lighting. And one thing you will never see in my shop is 20 neonate BCIs stuck in a freezing 10-gallon tank.
