How or why? yes, this was my first snake... did I do something stupid? so here is some history...
I'm going to buy my 10-year old son a pet... but, really I kinda wanted a snake... so it's a joint project... I read books, tons of care sheets and choose a Boa. I'm ready for the long-term commitment and plan to build new cages as growth requires. I remodel his closet, wire in outlets, an exhaust fan, lights, and build wood racks. I buy a heater and humitifier and add plants to the room for the perfect jungle effect. Finally, We buy a 22inch, 2oz. baby Rail Tail from a chain pet store. I follow the care sheets, with our 29gal glass "fish" tank. After a couple of days.. I found mites.... I deal with them, successfully! I feed her fuzzies mice, successfully! then came a shed period. didn't happen very well, only a little skin came off under her chin. so, I soak her daily, in warm water... nothing. Her defecation was running then I would have thought normal. then she rejected her last meal, stopped tongue action, and within the next day gone.
I can't believe it's some mistake on my part?? I wanted only the best for her. in less than a month it's over. Good by my friend..
If there is a shared learning from this posting, it might be worth passing on...

Hello and welcome to the site! Ok first off you can't blame yourself for the death of this little girl! Sometime's baby snake's just don't make it no matter what we do to provide a good home!! My guess would be she was sick from the start!! My first guess on the chain pet store would be Petco! If this is the case take her back raise cain and get your money back!! They will refund, too many others on the site have proven it!!!

Well, from the sound of your story, I really don't think you did anything wrong.
You did what a lot of people don't do, which is learn about the animal before getting it.
My question is where did you get the animal?
There has been quite a few postings about strange deaths from major chain stores
that recieved bad stock.
Could be the snake was sick before you even got it home and you gave it the best life it has known so far.
Don't let this discourage you.
When you are ready for another one, get the area and tank ready for it before you get it.
Such as cleaning the entire tank with at least a 10% bleach / water mix and wash everything else like hides, etc. off with the mix also.
Welcome to Redtail even though on a sad note..

What did you use to treat the mites? So far the only mistake that I see is where you got the snake... A chain pet store???? one like Petco? Chain stores like this usually neglect in care for the critters they keep and most often end up selling people sick snakes to start with. Other than that everything else you did seems ok.
and WELCOME TO RTB. Hope ya hang around for awhile. Sorry to hear this happened to your snake. Specially your first.

It is hard to tell where the mistake was, but the biggest mistake of all was made long before you got your snake. Certain chain petstores such as PetCo/PetSmart cary animals that are of second rate health and pass them off on customers as healthy animals. There have been several stories we have heard on the site lately of people purchasing these animals and finding out that they have mites or worse. Please read the care sheet about boas on this website by clicking on the "Caresheets" link in the Main menu to the left of every page.
Good luck.... and buy boas from a known and respected breeder.
-Morti.

You are correct with your guess... PETCO I have yet to call them, the receipt reads, "only guarantee for only 15 days". however, I would like my money back.
They claimed that via mail order "breeders" you can't see what you are buying, and who knows what you might get, but I'm thinking breeder snakes will be healthier...

how long did you have the snake.. It wouldnt hurt to pay them a visit and talk with them. If the 15 days had past you probably wont get anything but you can surely raise a rukus.

LOL EVERYONE!!! How many people can post at the same time saying exactly the same thing!
PetCo has a good point there... You can't see what you get with online breeders... that is why there are such places as www.boardofinquiry.com
If you are intrested in an animal from any known breeder (or most of the unknown ones ) You can post their name there as an inquiry and you are bound to get some feedback.
Here's my short list of people you can order boas from and Definately not be screwed:
www.boaphile.com
www.theboastore.com
www.pkreptiles.com
www.vpi.com
www.mccarthyboas.com
And as has been mentioned, there are several smaller breeders here on the website that you can't go wrong buying from (Support the Litte Guy!)
I have a few boas left, CB76 has a litter that was born this week, JoeRissa had some boas recently, and several others that I am sure I am missing.
Good luck and keep us posted!
-Morti.
