I just got a baby red tegu, and since I have had her she has not gone to the bathroom. I took her back to the pet store where I work and the guy in the reptile dept gave her some cat hairball remedy, I have been soaking her 2-3 times a days in a warm bath fro a bout 15 minutes each time. I have been lightly massaging her tummy area and so far all I get is a little urates. I have not been feeding her for 2 days even though she wants to eat! Can someone else tell me what to do before I have to go to the vet!

Well, It sounds like you have done everything you can except for go to the vet. I am highly dubious about the cat hairball remedy, but I don't really know tegus.
I would definately think that the vet would be a good thing at this point.

how long did you have her before he/she was given hairball medicine?
sounds like you should just be a little patient.

OK so I was tired of worrying, I have only had her for a week so I took her to the vet!
He did an enema and low and behold she was full of the substrate that the guy at the pet store had her on. She has medicine and goes back next week and seems to be doing fine, but if anybody is interested I will kepp you posted!
Thanks

Do you know what the substrate was exactly that it was on in the pet store ?
Was this one of "those" chain pet stores ?
Did the vet make any comment on the use of the cat stuff in the tegu at all ?
Soo many ??'s ..so lil time hehe

hi Lori
She was on "Lizard Litter"(desert blend), the vet said if it was older she would have been o.k.
but the fact that she is young was the cause for the ingestion. Actually this is a family owned pet store, I used to work there, , the guy that works the reptile has moved them to a different enclosure but still I felt like they should have at least split the bill with me......The vet said that alot of places will use the hairball thing to avoid going to the vet, and that it is not harmful and usually works really good! I will be taking her back to finish cleaning out her system, she was real stressed last time so he wanted to do it in 2 visits. Plus she is taking( Cisapride "propulsid" to help move stuff along. Yup..I use that litter stuff in some of my cages here, BUT for the larger ones not any baby ones. Heck..he should have covered the whole bill...It was his doing that got the tegu impacted in the first place. Have you approached him in regards to any reimbursement on the bill at all as yet ? Even if he handed off some reptile supplies it would help defray some of your cost in the long run. Afteralll...The animal got this way while under his care....

Heck Lori
This place is a bunch of tight wads!!!! The owner would not let his wife put one of our sick birds asleep because he was hoping it would get better and he wouldn't be out of the money....
So it suffered till it passed away But I look at it like this if I would not have bought her she would still be impacted and her chances of getting bought were slim anyway since she was missing some of her tail! She would have suffered while being crammed full of cat hairball remedy till she died!
