Hi, i have a water dragon that has 1 cloudy eye. As of today the eye is now swollen a bit and he doesnt seem to open it. The other one is fine. He doesnt seem to be eating too good right now but he doesnt seem lethargic. His other eye looks perfect. I got some drops today from a petsmart manager who said his water dragon used those when he had eye problems. Can anyone give me any other ideas what i can do short of taking him to the vet? Thanks

I am not a lizard expert, but if his eye is infected, and not treated pretty soon, he could lose his sight or his eye. I would get him to a vet ASAP. Good Luck!

Are you sure the problem with your water dragon is the same problem with his? The wrong meds could actually do more harm than good. I would suggest taking your dragon to a vet and find out exactly what is going on with the eye. Then you can find out if those meds will work or not. Theres no reason for taking chances here, the dragon could lose it's sight or maybe even his eye if the right meds arent given in a timely manner.

Its your responsibility to find time to bring him to the vet and get him the proper care, If you had a child, who was sick... would you not bring him to the hospital if he needed it even if you were "too busy"? If your child died because you refused to take him to the doctors (even though this would not be so serious in a child... you would still need to bring him to the docs) this could kill the reptile pretty fast if not taken care of... they would take you to the judge and you could go to jail (if you child died and you refused to take him to the docs when he was sick)

thats a child this is a reptile. regardless, it seems to be getting a lot better so i will monitor it and if he starts to look lethargic or the eye swells again he will go. FWIW, i do agree w/ what you are saying i didnt realize it could be so serious as he seems to be as active as ever.

Wow!
Looks like everyone forgot to say -
Welcome aboard!
Any ways, as long as it is responding to the drops, keep it up untill it is all clear.
Chances are, the drops are a wide spectrum antibiotic any ways.

gentamicin is a pretty strong general antibiotic. It should be fine. If it doesn't work, then you can make the vet trip. good luck

the drops are working great. all the swelling is gone and a lot of the haze is gone as well. i can see his eye through the haze left and he seems to be doing well.

Yay! Good luck with his continuing recovery. Despite the eye thing, he looks like a pretty dragon!

yeah hes awesome, problem is my cat has a tendancy to get into the cage even though the cage is 7' tall. I had the WD out the other day and it didnt take crap from the cat. he had his mouth open and rather then run he lunged at the cat as she was smelling him. The cat was really gentile w/ him but i dont plan to make that an every day thing, im just surprised the WD was that agressive. he closed his mouth and calmed down as soon as i put my hand under his belly to pick him up. Im suprised he didnt try to lunge at me.

Dave,
87Mustang (Justin), on the MidwestFords board, has a 14ft+ Burmese Python that could take care of that cat.

well i took him to the vet today because he still isnt eating and they gave him a shot and mycitracin gel stuff to put on his eye. he also put a dye in it to check for ulcers i think it was. he told me to force feed him if he doesnt eat soon. a nyeone know how i can do this. i opened his mouth once w/ my hand but he bit my fingerj. i cant get the food in there as he wiggles. Caqn i try to feed him some type of liquid instead of insects?
I also think he has some type of upper respiratory infection as when he moves his skin under his mouth as if hes breathing i hear a little pop like hes congested or something. am i on the right track w/ t hat?
thanks

When he bites your finger just run a catheter tube behind your finger and down his throat. Make sure not to force it and make sure and lubricate it. You can just lubricate it by wetting the outside with whatever you are feeding him or you can use KY.

hes only bit me once when i was testing how hard it would be to open his mouth. I dont want to hurt his jaw either. its very hard to open. Should i feed him regular food like i normally do (worms, crickets etc) or something liquid? Liquid would be MUCh easier. Anyway, is there ANY reason that a WD wouldnt eat? I mean he is not lethargic and hes running around ok w/no signs of sickness. his color isnt bad either. his eye is getting much better too. I just dont want to keep stressing him out trying to force feed him if he in fact doesnt need it.
Thanks
dave

do you keep food in the tank at all times like buy a dozen crickets and let them live in cage with him
if do he could be eating when you'r not watching or maby they layed eggs and hes eating the pinheads by the hundereds and there for not hungry when you want him to be
or he could be constipated
