Caiman lizard?
I've never even heard of these before until I stumbled across one on ks. Does anyone have any experience or info about them? I think they're amazing looking!! If I had a ton of money laying around, I just might try to get my hands on one

Re: Caiman lizard?
He has it listed for $2000
This site says they used to be more popular as pets in the 60's and 70's ... Caiman Lizard: WhoZoo
They also listed their scientific name as Dracaena guianesis

Re: Caiman lizard?
Is cat food better for them (lizards) than dog food? I know my turtles will eat Pedigree Puppy but they much prefer Whiskas. My SPiny Tail likes the tinned wet Pedigree - just a bit sometimes with his regular diet.

Re: Caiman lizard?
I'd take one if I had the cash for sure. Would be an awesome breeding project. Imagine how they would clean up after selective breeding for a few generations!

Re: Caiman lizard?
I wouldnt feed any reptile dog or cat food, several of the dyes they use are very harmful to reptiles,
as for draceana, they are known to be heavy snail eaters, good luck finding a
regular supply of snails to feed a 3' teiid

Reason: mis spelled dyes dies : ) and some typos

Re: Caiman lizard?
They don't have to be fed solely snails do they? I would think snails once a week or so would be ok but then again I know nothing about the species

Re: Caiman lizard?
They have been protected in their countries of origin for a long time now; that is why you do not see them anymore in the pet trade. Somehow, one found its way into the pet trade here and the dealer approached me about how to take care of it. He was shocked when I told him to feed it snails (because of the high parasite load). I saw it last week for the first time in months and it appears to be doing great (I am sure it loves the weather here). They are beautiful but I do not have the space or money to take care of one. Snails are no problem here.
.
Cheers,
Michael

Re: Caiman lizard?
Are they endangered then? Since they're protected? They are gorgeous, but I don't have the space or money either! Maybe one day... I keep telling myself that with a lot of things

Sorry, I did not see your question. They are not endangered, but they are protected from export by the countries from which they come from . They apparently make a very good leather and were being wiped out quickly before being afforded protection. If they were not protected, they probably would become endangered.
