My dad almost stepped on this...
at the ranch. Luckily my daughter spotted it before he could squash it.

Cute little thing. We had one in our back wooded area and I had no clue what in the world it was. I thought it was a fence lizard until I got a better look and I was clueless until I looked it up. My thoughts, "What in the world is a Texas Horned Toad doing in the Carolinas?"

There isnt a proven established community of Texas Horned Lizards here, but I've seen fence lizards, and I've seen horned lizards at reptile shows..
There is an obvious difference, and I KNOW I've seen those in my area. LOL
Cute lil buggers..did he shoot any blood out of his eyes? I hate when they do that..lol
Very neat find

LOL, that is what gave me my clue Courtney. I thought it was a female fence lizard and tried to grab it until it shot yucky stuff out of its eyes. I had no clue what in the world was going on. Needless to say I left it alone, ran in and hit the internet really quick. I wish I would have gotten my camera instead though. Here are my fence lizards that have been populating my area.

Nah, he didn't shoot blood out of his eyes. In fact, I have never encountered one that has ever done that. And I've seen a bunch of these little guys in the Rio Grande Valley. I guess they have to be really freaked out to do that as a last defense.
I was fortunate enough to see two BIG ONES in battle once. I noticed something flopping around in the dirt about 20 yards from where I was at, and when I walked up to them they froze in posistion. One of them was on it's back with the other one on top of him and they each had eachother's front claws in their mouths. They didn't move until I left. Good times.
