depends on what kind of blacklight you're talking about. the regular poster type black light you get at the mall or wal-mart can not be used (well, should not be used ) on any herps. over time they do damage the eyes, mainly the retina. the other type, like the kind you get at a herp store, made for reptiles is fine. I recomend the red zoo-med bulbs. you can use them 24-7. also make sure you have a uva'uvb full spectrum bulb with at least CR80. I use reptisun 5.0 with my tegus, they absolutly have to have this, they will eventully die without it.
What kind of tegu are you getting? I love everything in the tupinambus family . there are a lot of misconceptions about them, a lot of shops try to charge people for the wrong tegu. the try to pass off blacks for black and whites (normally $50-$60 more expensive). it is very rare to actully find a black and white in a petstore, most of them are blacks. and there is no such thing as a gold/gold and black. gold/gold and black is actully just a younger black (tupinambus teguixin). the gold will turn white as they grow. Black and whites actuuly hatch out BRIGHT green!
hehe, is RTB tired of me yapping about petstores everytime some brings up tegus yet -Juggalo

I will be getting a True Black & White Tegus (Tupinambis merianae) from Ron St. Pierre. Maybe a Chacoan not sure yet. My question was because I like using blk Light at night for my snakes, viewing and such and was wondering if they are in the same room would it bother the Tegu

Depends on the type of blacklight. where did you buy it? is it ment for reptiles, or is it ment for posters, and that sort of thing? if it's the kind of black light that comes in a long strip fixture that you can buy at non-herp places like wal-mart, or party stores, and doesn't say anything about reptiles on it, or did you get it at a petstore, and it states on the box that it's made for reptiles? if it's the party type, it will hurt your tegu, AND your snakes. I like zoo-med redbulbs a Whole lot better, they light up the cage real nice, and don't bother/hurt your herps photoperiod. -Juggalo

The blk lights I use are for reptiles. I am just wondering if tegus can or can't see that type of light, i.e snakes can't see red or blk light.

be better off using the red or others like that. the tegu's spend a lot of time sleeping(lazy)and basking. the new full spectrum bulbs are fantastic (little pricey though). with those you will also need either the red or the blue for night. ensure you turn the fluorescent off at dark. this will help them with the day/night things. st. pierre is extremely knowledable. make sure you mist tanks, and feed fruits, to keep vit c up. stay away from citrus, too much citric acid. anymore questions contact either me or juggalo. he has at least one, and i have 2 reds.
