Some daytime fun in Quintana Roo with the local lizards...
These Ctenosaura sp. are simply everywhere. The ones living near people are not tame but they have a modified flight-radius (that distance where they can be approached before they scoot). If you know how to use that to your advantage it is possible to catch dozens of all sizes in a very short while.. be advised the ones over say 2 kilos will bust your equipment and it's heck-to-pay to chase them down across some junkyard to get the pieces of your rig back that they're wearing like a prize.. OR so I have been told.
.

.
I am always very careful not to let the locals see how I catch these. Most every kid and many adults attempt to kill them whenever they can. Mostly just for kicks but also they eat them. The lizards quickly take over any pile of debris (such as hurricane damaged buildings) and many have stump-tails from people attempting to drag them from cracks and crevices. The ones observed out in the forests and on the barranquillas of old quarries and roadsides rarely have stump tails. Here's some close-ups.. many parts of their bodies will cut, puncture and scrape you!
.

.

.
And.. Oh yeah, though some of them act quite tame and you might be tempted to maybe put them on the dashboard for a driving partner/dash ornament (especially if you've been hitting the brewskies) they wait until they're really charged up and hot then bound from the dash at ludicrous-speed, ending up in the springs of the seats somewhere. OR SO I HAVE BEEN TOLD!
.
Have fun, Be safe!

Club-tailed "iguanas" are Ctenosaura defensor, that lizard you have there is a different species, commonly imported from El Salvador, it is not a club-tailed iguana (Ctenosaur). This is another case of the Pet industry using a catchy name to sell stuff.
.
These lizards are not pets, though I have seen some few that are obviously happy and tame in captivity and kudos to those people keeping them for their success. I would make an estimate that 90% of them imported and sold don't last 100 days. You may have already learned this but they require plenty of heat, humidity, natural sunshine and privacy to be established. Lots of greens and about 10% tropical fruits would be a good diet.
.
Good luck.
