I got an email from a guy trying to figure out what kind of lizard he's been seeing in his backyard. It looks like some type of basilisk to me, but I'm not sure what. It doesn't look like a native species to me, but since he lives in Florida, I'm thinking maybe some escaped and started a colony. Any idea? Here's the pics he sent and the information he gave me.
I live in Ft. Lauderdale Florida. We have all
kinds of chameleons down here, but for a couple years now we've seen the
lizards in the pictures that I sent you. We see them often and in places
nearby other than my back yard. I saw about 7 of them while bike riding near
the woods. Curiosity has us... It will let me get about 3 feet away before
standing upright and running away on it's hind legs. Just the other day I
saved the one pictured from several blackbirds trying to get at it in my
backyard . The lizard actually jumped at the birds trying to protect itself
until I went out and scared the birds away. Please feel free to post the
pictures anywhere you want if it will help. We would really like to know
what it is, and learn a little about it. It doesn't appear threatening, it
only looks that way. Another guy on the web saw the pictures and suggested I
call the Humane Society immediately.
