question about Chinese Water Dragon!!!
i just bought a baby CWD yesterday! He is probably around 7". i am feeding him on small crickets. but, he is not eating them. in my thought, small cricket is kind of too small. i am afraid he cannot even see it. can anyone reduce my concern? should i feed him on mealworms, waxworm or something esle when he is baby? so he can see them and easier to catch them. the other question is that does he need UVB? i read his caresheets already. they said so. but my friend who had a CWD before said he doesnt need any UVB. so anyone can help me to give my CWD proper care? thanks for your help.

As for feeding, mine usually takes anything that moves! Try other insects to see what he prefers, maybe the larger crickets will spark some attention. Others may disagree but I would say Yes for the UVB, I know people who say no, but it will have a lot of benefits for your dragon such as stimulating the appetite if he has UVB light.

Every time I get something new, I have to remind myself that animals are very stressed by moves. If you only got him yesterday, I wouldn't worry for a few days of not eating. As far as UV goes, CWDs should have UVA and UVB. Nicole Russell is the local lighting guru, so I won't even go there. If your dragon continues not to eat, you could offer any of the feeder insects or worms. There should also be a fruit and vegetable component to his diet.

i just bought a baby CWD yesterday! He is probably around 7". i am feeding him on small crickets. but, he is not eating them.
IF I HAD A NICKLE FOR EVERY TIME I HAVE HEARD THAT I'D BE RICH
in my thought, small cricket is kind of too small.
PINS OR 1/8? DID YOU ORDER THEM ONLINE OR BUY THEM AT A STORE?
IF IT'S ANY LARGER THEN HIS HEAD WIDTH WISE THEY ARE TOO LARGE...THEY SHOULD BE A LITTLE SMALLER THEN THE WIDTH OF HIS HEAD.
i am afraid he cannot even see it. can anyone reduce my concern?
DON'T WORRY ABOUT HIM EATING RIGHT AWAY---MOST LIZARDS WILL NOT EAT THE FIRST WEEK (MY WATERDRAGONS DID NOT EAT IN FRONT OF ME FOR OVER A YEAR AND STILL THEY WOULD RATHER NOT DO IT). HE WILL EAT WHEN HE FEELS HE HAS:
A PLACE TO HIDE AND GET AWAY FROM YOU
NO AUDIENCE
A PERFECT HUMID AND WARM ENVIRONMENT
A FOOD SUPPLY OFFERED REGULARLY IN THE SAME PLACE HE CAN COUNT ON
NO HANDLING FOR WHILE
LIZARDS TAKE TIME TO ACCLIMATE---DO NOT HANDLE THE ANIMAL UNTIL HE EATS AND BASKS AND IS COMFORTABLE IN HIS NEW ENVIRONMENT.
DO YOU LET THEM (CRIX)LOOSE OR PUT THEM IN A TRAY?
yOU CAN TRY SMALL SUPERS/MEALIE/WAXES (IN MODERATION)/EARTHWORMS...AND LATER TRY SOME SILKS AND HORNWORMS IF YOU CAN AFFORD THEM. ROACHES ARE GREAT TOO IF YOU CAN HANDLE THE WHOLE ROACH THING.
fRUITS AND SALADS (SALADS ARE NOT REALLY ACCEPTED UNTIL LATER) ARE A GOOD BALANCE.
BABY FOOD IS A GREAT TREAT AND MOUSE PINK CAN BE OFFERED WHEN HE GETS LARGER.
should i feed him on mealworms, waxworm or something esle when he is baby?
THEY SELL BABY SUPERS---AND SMALL MEALS--JUST BE CAREFUL WITH SIZE.
so he can see them and easier to catch them. the other question is that does he need UVB?
YES.
WATERDRAGONS NEED GOOD UVB. SEE THIS THREAD FOR MORE INFO:
http://redtailboa.net/forums/showthr...965#post139965
i read his caresheets already. they said so. but my friend who had a CWD before said he doesnt need any UVB. so anyone can help me to give my CWD proper care? thanks for your help.
I HAVE SEEN WATERDRAGONS ON OTHER FORUMS WHO HAVE HAD CRAPPY (NOT NO) UVB AND ALMOST DISINTERGRATED BONE WISE. WITH NO UVB YOU AR EASKING FOR PROBLEMS.
THERE ARE SOME WHO SUPPLEMENT WITH D 3 AND THINK THEY ARE GETTING ONE UP ON NATURE. TRUST ME---THE ANIMAL WILL SUFFER AND YOU WILL END UP BURYING IT OR TAKING IT TO A VET FOR CALCIUM INJECTIONS/BROKEN LIMBS FROM FALLING OFF BRANCHES AND/OR ANY OTHER NUMBER OF MBD RELATED PROBLEMS.
WATERDARGONS ARE DIURNAL LIZARDS WHO BASK REGULARLY IN THE SUN. THEY DO NOT BASK AS OFTEN OR IN AS STRONG A SUN AS IGUANAS OR BEARDIES--BUT THEY BASK AND REGUALTE THEMSELVES BY GOING INTO THE SHADE AND BASKING.
WHAT'S HIS NAME?

Difficult means it's about :
-nailing your husbandry
-hoping the animal isn't loaded with parasites
-luck of the draw
They are adorable animals. Personable and smart.
Without mentioning any names I can tell you that even some people who are well known "experts" on asian wd's could not keep them in the end--even though some people think they still do.
You can be one of the lucky ones....with so much conflciting info it's a wonder these animals stay alive at all.
Buy a quality bulb and change it as directed by someone who test bulbs--vary the diet as much as possible. Keep your humidity high but not so high you breed bacteria....keep the water VERY clean.....try not to keep the animal out of his controlled environment in the winter and fall...get some natural sun in the summer (be careful at first because natural UVB freaks them out ).....and take a fecal sample to a vet to check for parasites.
If you do all these things you have a good chance to have a healthy lizard but I have to tell you there still are no guarantees. They are very delicate creatures.
Good luck and let me know how you do---post some baby pictures soon before he looses that cute hatchling look

Keep us posted on how this little guy is doing. As for the screen, maybe he's trying to break through it.

they are notorious for nose rubbing and damaging their snouts. Usually though, it's throught the glass....keep an eye out for anytype of snout damage and try to but some plastic plants to cover the top near the screen.
