They have very powerful bacteria in their saliva that will cause an infection that there isn't enough IV cipro on the planet to stop. Aided by a very powerful olfactory (smell) gland, they hunt by simply biting something and then wait till it dies a couple of days later from an ungodly fast acting infection. they drop buffalo in this very way and then track them down later by smell and rip them apart for hours or days depending on how many other komodos the smell attracts. Generally a bite is required but I wouldn't want any of their drool slung onto any open scratches or cuts.

Thanks, LD & Mayard!
No the lizard isn't mine.
The mouth of the Komodo dragon is filled with serrated teeth, which are rife with at least 15 strains of bacteria. Because of the bacteria, a Komodo dragon's saliva is poisonous and causes infection if one is bitten or the salvia gets into an open wound. Interesting enough, other than the bite itself Komodo dragons are not effected by the bite from another Komodo dragon.

isolate those antibodies and create an antibiotic that will thwart a komodo bite infection and they will name hospitals and librarys after you I'm sure someone somewhere is working on it. I will NOT however go jump in line to volunteer to be a test patient. With my luck, I would end up being in the placebo group and die even if the drug happend to work lol

From what I have been told, those kept in captivity over time will loose that powerful bacteria.....hatchlings born and raise in captivity never aquire it. Even in the wild they must "reinfect" their mouths.
I know a man in FLA who has one and works with her each day. She's dog tame and very intelligent. For him, the situation is legal and man what I would give to be anywhere near his home
What awesome animals.
Nice pic John.

Oh, now that eye is scary, it is very 'human' and I fancy I see more than a spark of intelligence in it.

oh yes i love komodos...They are highly underrated as far as a predator is concerned. Some people think of them as lolli-gag lizards that habble all day. But they are extremely fast and agile, and can easily chase down a mammal.
to add to what JS stated, komodo saliva actually consists of MANY bacterias...Combined they make a slew of disease that just rot at the prey.
