Hello everybody! is txgirl and myself the only tegu owners out there? if there is someone else, what are there eating habits like? what do you keep your temps at, what kind of substrate........etc? "shamika" seems to be happy, and well, but there is just not that much information out there on this beautiful lizard, and I'm always looking for more! thanks for any input! -Juggalo

i've got 1.1 chacoans and 1.1 argentine reds. they are huge and eat like pigs. i got them as babies, they are now 2yrs old and at least the reds are breeding (the chacoans may be also, not sure--the male is giving it his darndest, just not sure if the female is receptive). we built a double decker 7foot by 3 foot enclosure for them. they live on a mix of soil and cypress mulch. cooked chicken seems to be the new favorite, but i give them everything--fruits meats, etc... they are spoiled!

Well, Juggal.
You're right that there isn't much info on Tegus to be found!
I spent some time yesterday looking for inf and came up with very little on them.
I did compile what I learned into a care sheet for them but it is far from complete.
If you or anyone else has info on the Tegus, feel free to drop me a line
and I will add to ,or correct the care sheet to get it as accurate as possible.

thanks eddie for the research!
lori, when you find one, make sure it's a black & white if thats what you want. many people ( most petstores included) confuse black tegus, for black & white tegus. there is a signifigant diffrence in phisical apperance, eating habits, original world location, price, and from what I've been told, temperment ( black & white being more docile). the easiest way to tell the difference is to look right inbetween their eye, and nostril from the side. on a black tegu, there will be one large scale, a black and white will have two. both lizards will have black and white scales however. after seeing a few togeather the difference will be unmistakable, they do look quite a bit different as far as their facial structure, and markings go. mine is a black tegu, her name is Shamika ( she gots a ghetto booty!) I love her, she's a great pet, highly recomended! good luck! -Juggalo

Try Ron St. Pierre via www.bluetegu.com. He has some info that may be of use to you. I myself have been wanting a bluetegu for a while but am still waiting for more space.

I hope that Ron's site can answer some questions for you. I remember just about every site I go to so that I can be ready for just such an occasion. No really it's more of a curse. Somebody will ask a question and then I have to answer(before I really think about it) and then go back and see if I gave them the answer I meant to. Still I hope it helps. I went back and looked and I wish I had oh.... Several million so I could by everything I want. Like an albino.

aren't you seeling your herps because of your apt. management? are they alright with your tegu? or do they not know? *sshhhhh....they might be listening!* I know the feeling. I live in an apartment also. I've been hiding my herps for a long time. until just recently I found out the managment knows, and doesn't care. -Juggalo

If anyone is looking for blue, red tail or black&white tegus.. there are a crapload for sale cheap here in Nashville at Aquatic Critter. If you're interested in coming here to get one, send me a PM and we'll make plans. I currently have a full grown Savannah Monitor and an adult Bluetail monitor. They are both awesome but two totally different lizards in every aspect. The bluetail is very fast, will bite the poopy out of you, wont let you handle him and loves to climb around while my savannah is very very tame, very projectile when attacking food and my god he can EAT. Right now he's eating me out of house and home, lol.. thank god I dont pay full price for feeders. I plan on getting a redtail tegu this summer.. but I cant get anymore monitors for now, already need bigger cages and more money to keep them fed as it is, eheh.

I use cypress mulch also. I don't feed in the enclosures though, just because they can be really messy eaters. a lot of the food I give mine is semi-sticky, like peaches, tuna fish, apples..... mine always have to get every little bit, so when a piece of food falls on the substrate, she eats it also, the cypress mulch gets all over the sticky stuff. so I feed mine just like a snake, in a seperate box. this really helps the aggresion to. they never think of food when they see my hand in the cage. After I have her out for an hour or so I feed her in her box. what kind of foods are you offering? -Juggalo
