No they don't see the red spectrum. mine gets:
strawberries, raspberries, kiwi, squash, corn, apples, zoo-med tegu food, tuna fish, skinless-boneless chicken, scrambled eggs with the shell, all kinds of different fish from the supermarket, cantelope, peaches, grapes, and mice. I probably forgot a couple things, but this is what I usually feed. it's important to offer a wide varity of things, they all have different nutriens in them. food should be dusted with some sort of vitamin dusting with D3 also. DO NOT FEED: apple seeds, watermelon seeds, marijuana (I know no one here would anyway) sweetpeas, rhubarb, raw eggs. dog/cat food can be fed to tegus, but should not be the main diet, as it has too much D3. with crickets I would feed in a different box, the tegu could miss, or accedently get some cypress mulch in the mouth. are you using some sort of full spectrum bulb also? reptisun 5.0 works great. yes, you should get him out everyday. try to get him on a leash, and go outside (if it's warm enough). spend a lot of time with him, they can be really testy, but will calm down with lots of attention. I always feed after handling also. feeding first can be like eating a big meal and going on a rollor coaster.<TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font class="pn-sub">Quote:</font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT class="pn-sub"><BLOCKQUOTE> redtail tegu </BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE>

When you say breathing hard, can you hear it? is he making short "huffing" sounds? if so, that's totally normal, he's just telling you he's tuff and he can beat you up. does he fall asleep fast, or after you've been holding him for a while and rubbing behind his ears (they love that) is he lifting his own head, or does it sag? does he seem active, or is he lathargic? if you think he ate cypress mulch, I would take him to a vet. what did you offer that he diddn't eat? -Juggalo

Well if you think he ingested substrat then you should take him to the vet! But first....
Has he gone to the bathroom for you?
Is it normal?
Is he shedding?

Ok well I have a few tegus so heres what I can tell you about mine!
My bigger one is a male, hes around 1 1/2 feet nose to tail, I always feed him in a tub so that he can't ingest his substrate, from what I have seen most larger tegus eat very aggresively so the chances of them getting substrate is very likely.... I offer mine fruits in the morning, he really like bananas, cantoloupe, watermelon(make sure there is no seeds in it) but offer him all kinds, I also mist him 3 times a day to keep good humidity, and I feed crics towards the afternoon dusted with calcium w/d3, multivitamins, and palin old calcium ( I altrernate these of course) If he is sheeding he may seem lazy......When kerry is in shed mode all he really does is lay around ( I mean with his front legs out in front and his back legs all the way behind him, flat on his tummy) he also doesn't seem to have much of an appetite when he is about to shed or shedding. I usually soak him in the tub frequently while he is shedding! Tegus can quickly become difficult shedders if you don't amintain the right diet, right humidity ect. With the tub thing He loves it and will actually fall asleep so don't make it to deep or leave him unattended! If he hasn't ate alot he may look like he is breathing hard (or that hes caving in) because hes not packed full of food! I don't know about yours but mine usually looks like a used tire when he getts done eating :0)........ If he has gone to the bathroom for you like normal then he probably didn't ingest his substrate or it just hasn't got to where it is blocking any thing yet so you need to watch him for a few days! My little tegu is about 6 inches long (her tail was nipped off by a clutch mate) and she was impacted with the substrate that the Pet store had her on when I got her......So we went to the vet and he gave her an Enema and also some meds to take and about a week ago she passed the last of the imapction and is pooping all over the place.
The main thing to watch is the poopy thing and also keep an eye on the area right in front of the hind legs, that's usually where the imapction ends up, carefully touch him there and if you feel a hardness like inside then I would go to the vet! Better to be safe then sorry! I hope this helps

I don't use any dog/cat food. dogs, and cats require way more vit D3 than tegus. if they have it too much they could have a D3 overdose overtime causing damage to the liver, kidneys, and bone deforities. also some of the cheaper dies in dog/cat food can be harmfull. zoo-med makes a canned tegu food, that's formulated for tegus, it's like $5 a can, about the size of a tuna can. if dog/cat food is used, I would use it sparingly, and should definitly not be used as the main food source. -Juggalo

Blue tegus have quickly become my favorites! I had a black and white for about 9 years and his temperment was pretty good, as long as food wasn't around! But the look of the blue tegus is so much cooler in my opinion. And these guys are het for albino too!
Not the best photos, but the #$%^$%^$%^$%^& things won't hold still for more than a second . . . always wanting more and more food . . .
