I don't have a tegu yet, but alot of people seem to be keeping them in 6x3 enclosures...they don't appear to require as much space in captivity as a similar sized monitor. Alot of people house them outside (esp for breeding purposes). I don't know what part of the country you are in, but I beleive that arg. black & white tegus are very cold tolerant and one of the largest tegu breeders in the country houses them outside year round in Alabama.

hey girl, we talked a few times about our tegus, they're about the same age, I belive. anyway, I just moved Shamika (my tegu) into a 75 gal, and man! she is lovin' it! I put some artificial plants in the back left corner and a hide in the front left. there's a under tank heater about midway accross the tank (medium flukers). I got one a' them driftwood pieces affixed to stone at the bottom so it stands straight up on its own that reaches about 3 inches from the top of the screen with a 40 watt heat light right above it so she can climb up it and bask ( this is her favorite spot in the whole cage ). I was worried about her rubbing her snout on the screen, but she doesn't! what a good lee-zard! a few other pieces of driftwook coming from it so she can climb around on them. and a water dish all the way to the right. there's a full spectrum light strip ( 48" accorss the top, and a 75 watt CHE suspended a'top the cage. day time ambient is 90, with a cool spot of 82, and basking at 100, and 95 right below it. I'm currently using reptibark. pic's comin in a little while! she loves this setup, and never runs out of things to do! -Juggalo

Well that sounds pretty close to our setup! Kerry has a 65 gal (it has the floor space of a 40 breeder but much taller). We are using the repti-bark or the co co-bark(?), he has a huge piece of drift but I have to figure out how to make it steady since when I lean it against the glass and he climbs his big but on it slips down the side! Hes a good eater!! The funny thing is, he spends alot of his time sleeping! I seriously have to wake him up and I can tell you he is not a morning person!!! He likes to dig and burrow alot so he has losts of repti-bark to play in! He has a basking spot of about 94 on the right side of his tank, the under tank heater is in the middle of the tank right below his hide box, his cool side stays around 80. we did have his hide on the side with the basking lamp but he keeps moving it to the middle! He reminds me of a puppy! I will get pics up soon!

I know what you mean! Shamika hates to be woken up. she'll be irritable for like 15-20 min after you wake her up! but she's usually up and playin' aroung during the daytime, so waking her is not usually an issue. txgirl, you have an argentine red, right?, they are supposed to be less aggresive in general than black or black and white, I wonder if it's typical for them to sleep more? I put another hide in with shamika, on the hotter side, it's got some moss in it for humidity, I've seen her scopein' it out, but I haven't actully seen her go inside yet, the hide on the cooler side she used a little when I first got her, but now she just burrows herself in her reptibark! -Juggalo
