Sand Boa substrate

I've arranged to adopt a Kenyan Sand Boa from a woman on Sunday, and I'm currently setting up her enclosure. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the ideal substrate? I've heard playsand recommended as a good, cheap substrate, but anapsid.org recommends against it.

The boa in question has apparently been living on sand, so, if she's doing well, I'm hesitant to switch her onto something completely alien (but I have no idea what kind of condition she'll be in).

Anyway, any thoughts on the matter? Is sand a good substrate, or should I be investing in something like aspen for my girl to burrow in?

Re: Sand Boa substrate

I keep mine in sand, just because it is their natural habitat, anyway, like Spike said. Just don't feed them in the sand, of course!

Re: Sand Boa substrate

Aspen is actually considered to be the best substrate for sand boas.

Sand is not a good substrate for much of anything.

Sand or aspen will work fine.

Re: Sand Boa substrate

Go with shredded aspen. Sand has a tendency to get in the respiratory tract as well as the digestive tract. Especially the fine sands that people buy. As long as it is a substrate where burrowing can occur, your little guy will be happy. Good luck with him/her.
