Heh. I just got 0.1 Adult BRB today from my friend's collection. I got her home, slid her out of the bag into her cage and she tried to jolt out while putting the top on. So, of course as my wife held her tail I had to reach for the middle to get her back. I saw it coming a mile away but couldnt avoid it and got nailed leaving a full mouth of teeth marking on my arm. Hopefully she will settle down as I'm sure everone who comes over will want to see her due to her beauty and I hate dealing with snakes that i KNOW will bite me on a regular basis. Owell, part of the game

Our Rainbow Seurat bit my hubby when we first got him...he is now about 6 months old...and a sweetie pie. I told hubby I would handle Seurat after he calmed down a bit And Dotti...she is about 1 year old...hasn't bit me...she is a very polite young lady. My baby RTB (3 months now! wow!) not only doesn't bite or strike, he gets upset when I put him down! He'll crawl all over me and lick my ears, but if I put him next to me on the sofa, he'll run back into my lap. When I try to put him back in the cage, he curls around my hand and looks at me. The only exception is putting him in his feeding box Then he starts dancing and waiting for the mouse to drop...

Normally, males seem to go around 5', females to about 6'. Not all are normal... they can top out smaller than that, or get quite a bit bigger. First one I ever saw was in the Philly zoo around 1976. I still have a photo of it. It was about 8' long and almost as thick as one of those cans of Boston brown bread... 'course that's twice as big as the next biggest one I've ever seen. Prices seem to vary a lot, but this is the right time of year to start looking. Last year the range seemed to be $90-175 for neonates, depending on looks and the breeder. I've seen really pretty breeder females go (quickly!) for as much as about $450.
Ours, Henrietta, just recently got big enough to wander around on the floor and furniture without us fearing she will slip down the heater vent or something. It's been really fun watching her turn into an adult snake. She's about 13 months, somwhere around 40" long and about 1" across. What a nice snake...

>>The only snake I have ever been bit by is a Brazilian rainbow. I swear my baby is viscous. If you let him crawl away and then grab him to put him up he bites. Bites 1 out of 10 times getting him out of the cage. Little devil, I really hope he out grows this. He can't break skin yet, but a full grown BRB with the same demenour would be #$%^$%^$%^$%^&. They can strike easily half or more of their body length. Please tell me they gow out of this. I handle him like crazy because I want him to be nice.
>>
>>P.S. I never find him hanging out on the hot side of his cage, even with a full bellie, only likes the cool side and i know it's not too hot.
>>
Well, although some might try to flame me for this, I don't get mine out by hand anymore. I tried for months to get him out by hand, and got tagged everytime. I rigged a hanger up now to get him out, and once I have him out of the enclosure, he's just as docile as any snake I've handled...that is, until you set him on the floor. I've put him on the floor to try to measure him, but as soon as I get close, he's coming for me. He's not sick, no mites, no ticks, and I handle him almost daily...he's just always pissy! I'm hoping that with age he will calm down b/c he's still a young'un.
You're on the right track by handling him all the time...that's the only way that any snake will get used to being held is by constant contact with you (except after feeding, of course). As far as not using the hot side, don't worry about that. My hot side is only about 85-90 degrees, and he still insists on sitting on the cool side. As long as the snake is eating well, seems curious when held, looks healthy, and your husbandry is consistant with their requirements, all is well....I'm sure that the snake heads to the hot side from time to time, you just never see it...I know my snake gets in his water bowl, b/c I see the mess in it when he's done, but I never see him in there...
Good luck with the calming, and post some pics for us when you get a chance!!

Coferj, I can't see why anybody would flame you for that -- at least you're getting him out and working with him. A note about that cool side/hot side thing -- a warm spot over 85 degrees is probably a little too warm. I say that on the basis of input from Tony B., Jeff Clark, and a bunch of others with lots of brb experience, as well as experience with my own snake. Daytime spectrum in my cage runs ~78-85, and I find her all over the place -- as long as all over the place only means UNDERNEATH the substrate. I can count on my hands the times in 15 months I've found her sitting somewhere visible.
Henrietta still hasn't bitten, but her personality is definitely changing as she gets big. She huffs and snorts when I go to take her out, and when handled she strictly tries to climb down off me and disappear into the furniture. On a related note, I think I finally figured out how to get her to eat reliably again -- put a live hamster inside her cage, on top of her wet moss. Out she pops like one of those Star Wars sand worms, and goodbye hamster. Next step -- dead hamster. After that -- dead something that isn't a hamster. Finally -- maybe get her to eat in a feed box again. But at least I'm not worried she'll starve anymore.
The brb is an interesting snake to keep -- full of idiosyncracies. By the sounds of it, no two are alike.

Well, I lowered the hot side at one time, but he quit feeding...and never went to the hot side, anyway. I only have a 40 watt light bulb on the hot side, but the temp hovers right around 85-90, and he seems to be ok. As far as feeding, never really had a problem. He even eats in shed. There was one streak of about three weeks that he didn't eat, but that's over now...
But once I get him out, he doesn't try to take off. He sits right there on my hand, "sleeping". Very rarely tries to get away, and when he does, it's very slowly. It's just one of those things that I'll just have to see how he gets with time. Thanks for the input, though.

Hey, whatever works. When I had my warm side a little warmer, she used to spend all her time in the coldest spot. She has been a very good eater (even in shed, like you say), with the exception of a 3-week spell almost a year ago, and this hamsters-or-nothing thing she's been on since early August. I'm eager to see if she'll get back to 'normal' or if her personality swings amount to more than just some kind of phase she's going through. And I'm not looking forward to the day she finally decides to pop me, since she's looking more willing all the time, and her mouth keeps getting longer and her teeth are nice and sharp.
