Henrietta finally ate. This all started when I moved her to a new cage. Husbandry requirements were spot-on, but she didn't seem to care -- nor did she open up when I moved her back to her old box. In six weeks, she has refused the following items, offered frozen, live, and freshly killed, in her cage, in a feed box, in the daytime, in the dark, warm, warmer, and hot, whole or brained: medium rats, small rats, fuzzy rats, pink rats, large mice, small mice, quail eggs, fuzzy chicks. I was starting to feel like the guy pushing green eggs and ham. She finally ambushed a hamster I left live in her cage, in the dead of night. This morning -- no hamster, big lump. I was getting pretty worried -- she wasn't bony or wrinkly yet, but she was getting pretty darned thin. The next thing was a visit to the vet. I hope she comes around on rats again (she's always been a good eater of f/t rats in the past) because hamsters aren't cheap. Then again, it beats a vet bill. Guess right now I'll lay back and watch how she acts for the next ten days, then start trying again. And at some point, I'm going to have to get her into a larger cage again. The cage is 30", she's 46" and I while she isn't acting cramped yet, I don't think it will be long. I hope she takes it well.
