unexpected babies! what to do????
sooooo.... i got this female, and i was told that she was possibly gravid, but didnt think much of it. didnt feel anything. she hadnt eaten since i got her, and i thought she might be ovulating or something, but i really didnt know what to think. and then today i walk past the cage and look in and think to myself "oh my god thats a huge dump for a snake that hasnt eaten in so long" and then i look closer, and realize there are BABIES
it looked like i had just interrupted her. i was freaking out so bad i couldnt even dial the phone to call my boyfriend and let him know. im still kindof in afterglow/shock. uh.. i covered her cage with a blanket to give her some privacy, there are alot of duds [but she had a long temperature drop] and 3 babies so far, but it looked like she was still pushing them out...
so... what to do now? ive got boxes i can put hatchlings in, when do i take them out? should i leave them alone in the yolk? in the cage? when will mommy eat? how should i set them up, on paper towels? this is my first time ever having anything other then gecko babies, let alone something that is birthed and doesnt come from an egg...
one of them looked super beautiful... i am so excited i cant even think straigt. i grabbed my camera and just started snapping pics through the glass.
any help is greatly apreciated!

Wow theres a lot of slugs I think.
For the three that are still good, you need to put them in an incubator with about 85 F temp and vermiculute beddding.
I suggest also keeping them damp not too wet though the ones that are fertile.

Good luck!

what? into an incubator? these arent eggs. yes there are alot of slugs, i suspect it was from the temperature drop she experianced. i cant imagine vermiculite is good for babies that have shed and will soon be ready to eat.

An incubator? These aren't eggs dude. This is a live birth.
Once you are sure she's through dropping babies, remove mom from the cage. Give her a little bath and let her rest while you clean up the babies and then the cage. Go ahead and help any out of the membrane that are still in and don't mess with the umbilical cord. It will dry up and fall off on it's own. They will shed today or tomorrow probably and be ready to eat a rat pink. It's pretty common for them to require live pink rats ON loose substrate. Dums are weird that way. They hunt by burrowing all but their nose and waiting to ambush. Newspaper won't work. Bedabeast /forest floor is a good substrate to keep/feed them on. After they have established eating (3 or 4 meals) they will usually begin being ok with f/t in the tote. It may take a little transition of one change at a time though. Good luck with them. Mom will eat tomorrow if she's cleaned up and the new birth smell is away. Be warned...for the first couple of years, dumerils are extremely prone to eat each other. SEPERATE them and keep them seperated at all times. After a couple of years it becomes increasingly rare but certainly not unheard of.

good to know, thanks for the useful information.
how long will she be giving birth for? and how will i know when she is done? so far i have 2 babies that are out of the yolk and have already started to shed [in the big cage with mom] the 3rd appears to be premie/deformed and is dead.
so ill work on seperating them out and into a tub.
thanks again.

She's probably done. How long ago did you find them? I'd wait 30 minutes or so to be sure. She will probably bite the crap out of you when you go to get her out too. Got a snakehook?

Oh...Once you get the babies settled into their cages...watch for them to burrow. Don't use a hide...it will just get in the way. Once they are burrowed in with their little noses poking out...leave them like that till around 11 or 12 pm or so..(late night) and drop a live pink rat in with them...and step way back so as not to bother them. The explosion you will see is normal. Don't be overly concerned.

thanks everyone!
i dont have a snake hook, but she never made a move to bite me either, even when i was reaching in to pull out the babies. shes taking a bath now while im trying to clean out the cage. i have the babies all set up, and ill pick up some rat pups later for tonight, and some adults so i can start to breed my own again.
final count is 2 live, 2 dead [one deformed premie, one looks like it got out the yolk, but was then smashed by mom] and 9 duds.
the live ones are perfect as can be and BEAUTIFUL, a few days after they eat and settle in, ill take some pics
