Hehehe. Cool title huh?
The appartment that i live in was entered by the caretakers and tradesman to install an extra something to the water system yesterday. I am not sure if they noticed my annie though.
This is the problem... I live in a state that is trying to regulate dangerous animals from being kept as pets/companions/whatever, just the same as other states. Anyway, There isn't a definative on type of snake that is considered dangerous (other than piosonous and life threatening) to be pin pointed exactly. I've heard people 'wig out' coz i have a green anaconda and they're like.....(gulp)....DANGER DANGER!!!......... I mean c'mon people... Talk about a case of the one bad egg thing!
If i felt my annie to be dangerous then i wouldn't bother with this post. Even if she was... nobody is going to get a chance to see her in public. She's never allowed outside her enclosure without my supervision... Period! Call me mister reponsibility.
How can i cover up this species if it is brought to the publics eye through a wrecker of happiness? Is there another species of snake that resembles the green anaconda that i could use its name as a decoy? I tried finding out the laws on the net and calling the 'Dept of agri. Illinois' and am given a bunch of different answers... Yes you can/no you cannot/yes but only up to six foot/no because they eat people??
What the (insert obligatory language in here) is it people!!
If i don't say anything then that's fine but what if they came into my appartment again and realized what it is??? Like i said, what could it be mistaken for?
Thanks for reading.

Try a green burm ????
How big is she? Are you planning on keeping her 20 ft and beyond?
I've got two 85cm yellow annies, and they were initially very keen to
test the strenght of my skin with their teeth, but have mellowed very nicely.
What is the temperament of your green?

You have a green anaconda in an apartment what are you going to do when it grows up? anyway, if I were you I would contact the SPCA in your city. they can tell you no BS what the law is. I doubt they will take the snake just because it is an anaconda. now if it is a LARGE anaconda they probably can and will. how large depends on your local laws. I'm not positive because I don't know your local laws, but you shouldn't have a legal problem until the snake grows a bit. BTW, how big is it now? in most places I believe the law gets to step in when a snake reaches 8 ft. please let me know if I'm wrong! -Juggalo

If there's no laws about it yet, you might be eligible to keep it under a granfather clause provided you can prove that it presents to immediate danger to anyone if it were to free itself from its cage

I posted this topic to find out other peoples experiences.
I actually have a very good link with a bloke who is constantly being updated with dangerous reptile laws in the state of Illinois. He claims that the 8 foot maximum law is being enforced in this state. There was talk about totally prohibiting any snake species to even be allowed in the state of Illinois that exceeds the 8 foot mark regardless if it is a juvenile or not. Nothing in stone has been offered as yet.
My green annie is only a baby (3 foot) and seems to be growing quite well compared to when i first got her. Her size is of no importance to me so she will stay with me till she drops. She has an awesome temperament and always tries to climb up onto my hand/arm when i clean her water container/enclosure out. She doesn't seem to mind being picked up and held and has never bit me either. This is the reason why i am getting worried about when she grows to a more hefty size and if she keeps this personality will people still see her as a threat?
I already know the answer to this so i guess i need to find another state to relocate as a permit i enquired about would have been denied. I don't need any trouble! I wont be staying in this appartment for too much longer but am reluctant in moving out of the state. I guess i have no choice now. Is there a state that has no size limits on large snakes which is decent living for people as well?
Thanks again.

The only people that would see her as a threat would not care if she was aggresive or not. To them a snake is a snake is a snake, and they all hunt down, cause physicall harm, or eat people. Being your in an apartment and have the possability of someone entering your residence un anounced, you may have a problem. In Illinios on the books the law is 6'. Now I know plenty of people that have large burms, retics, and anacondas in Illinois. But they live in their own house. Apartment landlords are usually extremely against snakes. Only because some fool lets their Boa or other type of boid free roam the apartment. What then happens is the snake gets curious and finds a watter source...the toilet. Then the snake goes down the drain and roams the pipe system, and either comes up another persons toilet and scares the bajeezus out of them, or the snake dies in the pipes and cloggs the whole sewer system.
As far as a decoy name I use water boa, and say its an adult.
The Illinios dangerous animals act has many loopholes in it. Even though the species of snake will reach over 6' or 8' it is not considered illegal until it gets to that size. But in your case even possesing a snake depending on your lease could be grounds for eviction.
Once the snake is Illegal by size, it doesnt mean that the DNR police are going to come break down your door. If you keep the snake safely confined to your home you will never have an issue. But if you deside to go out and show off your pride and joy to the neighbors YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS. It's not only confiscation of the snake but a hefty fine too. The snakes future is entirely up to you.
I had no idea you were in an apartment. Having a green anaconda in an apartment disturbs me allot. I can just see some wanna be Croc Hunter coming into your apartment to do some work while your not home, and deside he wants to handle this pretty green snake. Snake bites him and he freaks out leaves the cage open. Snake gets out and wreaks havoc in the apartments. Sounds far fetched but in reality is it all that far fetched? I really hope that you are going to be moving into yor own home soon so you can have a more controlled environment for your pet.

I see your concern for my location Ed. It was only a temporary thing just until we could find something worth purchasing. The lease expires at the end of Jan 2003 so we are hoping to have something by then.
I wouldn't have got my annie if i was going to be staying in an appartment for a few years. The size potential is just HUGE!
On the appartment entering issue... We are usually warned in advance if someone is about to enter the appartment by flyers and so we prepare for the intrusion. The time they entered to do work on the water heater was 3 days after the due date. We just figured they had already done it on the first day so all was good (we covered the enclosure up with a sheet). To our surprise we found objects moved and not put back on the third day and just figured they had come that day. She wasn't covered up! No point crying over spilt milk i guess.
I think water snake would work too? Just need to find a species that kinda resembles it now.
The 6 foot rule is enforced in some counties though the county that i live in is 8 foot.

I'm no snake expert but I AM concerned that you don't think anacondas are dangerous.
Yes, they are!
Yours may not be aggresive but when it is full grown you could be mistaken for food during feeding time and find yourself trying to unwind yourself.
Not trying to lecture but to say that it isnt dangerous implies carelessness and lack of awareness, both of which increase the risk of you getting bitten by your own snake.

i am actually lucky, dont have that problem down here. however, i wouldnt go around announcing that you have an anaconda. ofcourse people who arent familar with snakes, and reptiles in general will think the movie anaconda. its just common sense. i think you and your anaconda will be fine. just be careful about who you tell about your friend
