Black panthers are actually a melanistic variety of Panthera pardus. Otherwise known as leopards. Although, that particular specimen looks to be an African juvenile(of course i need to see the teeth to try to get an exact age). The English, who seemed to love giving generic names to everything, called leopards panthers back in the 1800's, both the asian and african variety. When confronted with a melanistic one they simply decided to call it a "black panther" for the layperson.

My apologies if that came off as overly, or unnecessarily pretentious.

The panther was alot of fun. And I never thought about it as a leopard, but now that I think about it, you can see some spots through the coat. cool. Learn something new every day! The king was probably about 10 or 11 feet at that time. Amazingly enough, we got him feeding on rats wrapped in ball python shed. In the beginning, we did have to feed him snakes. One ball python died in transit, so we threw it in with in. He only ate the front half, and only the flesh and left the skeleton intact! Wierd! I have never seen anything like that before or since.

The Panther was at Zoological Imports in Florida. It was Mario's "kitty."
The King Cobra was at Mike Knight's place, Hotlanta Reptiles (now Southeastern Exotics) i | |
